On Derbauer’s video he got over 20% uplift from unlocking power limits alone on multicore scenarios. I think the 9700x might benefit greatly from tuning, especially a negative CO offset

I honestly see Linus’ take here, the CPU is power limited too aggressively by default. AMD’s chugging 3x less power than competition, I don’t understand what damage pushing the power limit 50% up for 10-20% extra performance will do.

Trading blows with the rest while being insanely power efficient. Good single core uplift (great for gaming) and benefits a ton from unlocking/pbo tuning.
Also lower price than equivalent last gen at launch and it doesn’t roast itself to death.
The title definitely makes sense, it’s just a different focus.

It’s funny because all these 3 videos are right (at least thumbnails because I haven’t watched Linus and HUB one). Basically to sum up most of this CPU reviews:
It has really good energy efficiency, performance is fine (little bit faster than 7700x), overclocking possibilities are amazing (even +25% multi core performance), but ultimately it’s not good CPU because is way too expensive (for the same price you can get 7900/X that’s faster in multi-core or you can get 7800X3D that’s much faster and more efficient in gaming)

the ryzen 9000 series are insanely power efficient, it’s almost like a direct response to intel.
and like. the x3d and ryzen 9 chips aren’t even out yet – and they’re the ones actually designed to compete with the CPUs they’re comparing them to- all of these reviews make that clear
once the price drops by the time those chips come out- it’ll be a great value

All of these videos have their own side to the situation, which is why multiple channels exists.
Is Ryzen 9000 a big performance uplift? No, it’s more or less just an optimization of the previous 7000 generation. Is that bad? No.
Sure AMD could’ve “hit Intel while they’re down” but they don’t have to.

Every tech channel goes with the click bait. AMD and Intel always hype new stuff up to get sales and goose the stock price. I never get the newest stuff brand new.
AMD 9000 is brand new. Give it 3-6 months. A lab is totally different than many different setups in real world situations.
Give a BIOS update or two and tweaking that users can do on their end.

I think they just prioritized different things. LTT focused on power usage, hardware unboxed focused on performance, and gamers nexus was somewhere in between. I think they all made valid points and which matters to do depends on the situation.

AMD is having the power limit to get a bit more time to double check their stuff and avoid damage. They will buff it in post with bios updates after they get more telemetry.

I straight up deleted Hardware Unboxed after this. That dude is way too headstrong set in ‘every year needs to be ## performance improvement, and if it isnt at LEAST this much faster its complete trash’. That isnt how computers work my dude. Some years it isnt about performance increases its about efficiency gains, and a LOT of us value efficiency a hell of a lot more than raw performance. Not all of us are using our PC’s for gaming. We have CPU loads running 24 hours per day. If I can get the same performance as the last generation for HALF the power draw, I am taking that with zero hesitation ALL day long.
Now granted, most people running that kind of workload are NOT using a #600 or #700 series chip, and this all assumes that the #900 and #950 and even Threadripper sees the same kind of efficiency gains. If they do, this is a VERY big win for AMD. If they dont, then its a moot point.
