Videogames are being destroyed! Most video games work indefinitely, but a growing number are designed to stop working as soon as publishers end support. This effectively robs customers, destroys games as an artform, and is unnecessary. This movement seeks to pass new law in the EU to put an end to this practice.
Currently supporters are needed to sign the European Citizens' Initiative.

  1. I thought this was going to be something like “Piracy is Killing Music” but “Piracy is Killing Video Games” instead.

This is better, but thing with live service games is they only last as long as the servers do.

I’ve seen one or two get taken over by the community after the servers got pulled, but that relys on people to care and have the skills and money to do that.

I know Ubi pulled The Crew, but was that because the servers were not paying for themselves anymore or what?

EDIT: Ok, I looked into it, and they shouldn’t have deleted it. People could have set up their own servers and played it there. Weak move Ubi.

  2. sorry what? you’re not paying for a game, you’re paying for a license. live service games in a nutshell

  3. Blacksad9999

Who’s going to pay for servers to stay online until the end of time?

What if they have proprietary code or engines that they don’t want released to the public?

This will end with these companies cobbling together an “offline mode” where you’re walking around empty maps with no other people, because that’s the cheapest way to meet the criteria.

And this is why I support small studios with their indie games. I avoid big game publishers.

I watched that dude’s video. What he want’s is going to kill live service games entirely.

If you’re going to require publishers to support all games indefinitely, like for decades, you’re going to see publishers much less willing to take chances on games, especially different or unique games. Expect then to see even more homogenization of games in the AAA world. Indie publishers will be even less financially equipped to support every game indefinitely, so don’t think they’ll be there to give you more variety.

  19. And if it won’t work, then just switch over to piracy.

  20. OldschoolGreenDragon

You wanna support something new, Kunitsu-gami is *right there.*

  21. Moist-Leggings

    STOP BUYING GAMES FROM EA.

If you buy their games, then you are a part of the problem.

    Just saying.
