I remember playing Gothic 1, and my cousin comes up, watching me and shaking his head in disgust.
“Hollywood spends so much time getting rid of lense flares, and now video games are putting them in everything.”
I loved it though, but now I hear his voice every time I see a lense flare in a game.

This was heavily used by Gameloft in their golden age when Iphone 4 was out. You young kids probably have no idea what Gameloft was and how big their titles were back in the days…there was a time when triple-A gaming on mobile device was a thing and instead of these bad paid to win free games you have these days, mobile games used to be carefully designed and made by huge teams with large budgets.
It was so big back then it basically killed PSVita, which is a fantastic device but born at the wrong time. If Nintendo Switch was born at the same time it would also suffer similar fate.

Is this the same phenomenon that makes it impossible to see certain parts of the pitch in FIFA on a sunny day
PinkRudeTurtle
No, from that time I only remember excessive amount of blurred games with green/blue/brown filter.

I miss when I could just turn off the lens flares in a game.

Lookup the horrible abomination of the syndicate remake. If you even dare call it a remake… from EA. Game was 90% lense flare
Percolator2020
Needs more motion blur, chromatic aberration, film grain and DOF.
Null_Singularity_0
No, but on a related note I just watched that Star Trek the other day. Seriously, wtf was up with that?

I turn off motion blur, chromatic aberration, and ambient occlusion on every game I get

Metal gear solid v actually uses lens flares very well imo. In contrast, I can’t bear to look at the sunset in GTA vice city (ps2)

Can we have more proof? One game isnt a pattern.

I love lens flare and bloom, but I hate motion blur, chromatic aberration, and depth of field.

I’ve never really hated lens flare or bloom. I completely understand why people do but it’s just never really bothered me

And people say they miss this era of visuals ?
LeMarmelin
Yes and it was awful.

I always compare it to when Coke and Pepsi had those fake water drops on the outside of the cans. Like they realized they could do it and didn’t think about if they should.
