A used system with enough power to play Minecraft is like $100, don’t subject your bother to this misery.

Newer versions of Java Edition (1.20.5+) won’t because they use Java 21 which doesn’t support 32-bit CPUs.
Besides, Minecraft allocates 2GB of RAM by default, and using up all ram isn’t a good thing since there won’t be anything left for the OS and background programs. With some trickery and mods you can get it to run with as little as ~80 MB, but it’s not an enjoyable experience.
The PC your brother got is essentially e-waste.
At best you can open a Minecraft screenshot on this. This PC is nothing more than a big paperweight in this day and age.

1.60ghz models never had HT. The logo is from later models so more like a 3ghz or something like that, sadly still does not help.
Upgrade wise most older Pentium 4 boards even if its socket 775 do not support newer Pentium D’s or Core 2’s.
Its essentially a potato.
Windows 10 will hog precious resources it would sorely need, Linux such as Arch would be the best bet still uses quite a bit of resources but maybe just little enough.
Minecraft uses a version of Java now that doesn’t support 32-bit CPUs so you’ll have to google which version does.
2gb of presumably ddr3 RAM isn’t enough…. maybe.
In all honesty apart from some more niche use cases this is e-waste as others said. I’d recommend instead maybe an SBC that has Linux support? Won’t run anything new but might get him interested in tinkering if he’s into that, if you do go that route I can help you out otherwise try to find a used PC on Facebook marketplace or even Ebay just gotta be patient is all.
It certainly looks impressive. But no. Minecraft doesn’t run on 32 bit systems anymore. You might be able to find an older version that’s a few years old though.
Honestly, this thing is a relic. It would be more efficient to find $100-200 and get a modern PC, than to troubleshoot the issues this thing will face.
idk but 100% install Linux, minimum req. memory on arch is like 512mb? you can get it lower on Gentoo but I don’t recommend running Gentoo on this.
An older version of Minecraft could run on this; how well, I dunno, but it could run on this. I’m pretty sure this has either a 3.2 or 3.6GHz hyperthreaded Pentium 4, so if a 32-bit OS is a roadblock to running Minecraft (or Java period) on this, just install a 64-bit OS. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to find a cheap GPU to throw into this as the motherboard’s integrated GPU won’t be up to much here.

I had a similar PC and best you get Minecraft prior to 1.5.2 on low settings with 30 fps.
if it comes with windows xp sticker it is old very very old. Windows 7 is 15 years old at this point…

I think I was about 16-17 years old when I had a PC with these specs, I’m now 40. You can make a retro PC with Windows 98 or XP to play old games, but not much more. Pretty sure it doesn’t run Minecraft.
The case is cool, you can also make a sleeper build if you can invest some money.

I think the best you could do with it is throw a lightweight Linux distro on it and use it for some light web browsing.
Linux would be a real option for these old computer. I do know you can play Minecraft on Linux, not a clue how well that will go with this PC.
PS Try creating a Live USB stick with Ubuntu to test it.

That is a goddamn torture device, my guy. Get him a cheap office prebuilt with somewhat recent i5/i7 chip, preferably with 16 GB’s of RAM and an SSD and slap in some budget card that doesn’t need external power.

Even 15 years ago, on a Pentium 4 HT @3Ghz, Minecraft was lagging like crazy.

Im playing elden ring flawlessly in a deskmini x300, the size of my xbox one gamepad.
Those huge towers are a thing of the past..
They will always be in our memories for the nice times they gave us, sadly the pentium 4 era is in that grey spot, no point of having them as windows 10 is totally retrocompatible with games designed for the win XP era….

32 bit Windows 10 is also no longer supported, it is unsafe for online use.
This would be a challenge, like a hobbyist challenge, as a curio. Short of someone willing to give you a step by step guide on what OS to install and how to install it and setting it up, , I’d just skip this, this is not a plug and play question.
For starters you’d need to get an older version of both Windows and Minecraft, say Windows XP and whatever version of Minecraft that last had support for that OS.
He’d have a better experience playing Minecraft on an Amazon Fire-stick. This machine is just gonna be test of patience. Not worth the stress.
I started playing Minecraft on a PC with roughly the same config (Im’ sure it was a Pentium 4 with HT, but I dont remember what else was in that system).
It was in Alpha, and I got like 15fps with a 7 chunk render distance.
My i7-6700K, 16GB RAM and a GTX970 system was struggling when 1.13 released (Tho tbf, it was pretty much all system, I’ve seen youtubers with very powerful set up struggling too without optifine).
There is no shot that thing runs current Minecraft in any way.
Your best bet for Minecraft on a budget would be a second hand gaming pc.
Best use case I could see for this is some super simple Linux distro and just use it for like browsing or something.
Then again, it’s probably not worth the effort.
Just sell this system to a vintage lover that has better use for it and use the money together with some other spares to buy a better PC
The last time the P4HT was relevant for gaming was probably Half-Life 2

You would have to “upgrade” it to even do that, which is just a waste of money as even fully upgraded this would be worth $0 and perform very poorly.
You would get a 2nd hand PC three times as powerful for $50.
