
This GPU was given to me by a friend for free. It used to be an ordinary KFA2 RTX 2080ti Dual Black (Picture 4 & 5) with one dead fan and a pretty bad overheating issue.
Because no seller that shipped to my location had the original of even a compatible fan up for sale I opted to perform this mod.
I used CAD, 3D printing and soldering to make this happen.
Overheating problems are gone, it‘s quiter, maintains higher clock speed and of all this while running cooler.
I would call this a success 😅

GPU with 3 fans turns into 2!
This card had a pretty bad bearing issue on of the two fans so that one fan wouldn’t spin at all.Due to the cooler beeing already not the greatest piece of thermal engineering and the 2080ti beeing a power hungry card, any type of load would make the remaining fan ramp up to 100% and any serious gaming would cause the PC to crash after 2-3 minutes due to overheating.
I tried to order a fan replacement online, but KFA2 in their infinite wisdom decided to use a VERY VERY uncommon size so that Banggood Aliexpress or even Wish or Temu (yes, I was desperated) hadn’t any replacement on sale.
So I thought about using case fans. But since I needed to card to be reasonably sized so that it would fit in most cases I’ve settled on 80mm fans. Since they were a bit smaller than the original fans I’ve opted to compensate for that by using 3 Arctic P8 as fans.
That caused a new problem: Since the original card had only 2 fans the daughterboard connecting to the fans had only two headers I soldered 2 fans onto one of the original fan connectors and did the same thing on the other fan. I also made the cables the right length so that cablemanagement would be nice and tidy.
After that i designed and printed a new shroud that fittes onto the original cooler to house the daughterbord and the 3 fans and the RGB Strip since i wanted to keep it. I sanded down the RGB Strip from the original card, since I think the writing on the side looks ass-ugly and the solgan is stupid as hell. After all I gave it a coat of white paint and assembled the card.
In the end I was quite happy with the result, however next time I think I would use some kind of putty to make the surface more even before painting.
But performance is quite good and even though fans are at 2000 Rpm it‘s dead silent and hits ~80C Max on hotspot while drawing about 260-280W.
Also 2000rpm on 80mm fans isn‘t as loud as the same rpm on a 120mil since there is less mass in motion and though less vibration.
After I was done, I flipped the card for 320€ (~360 freedom eagles) and payed about 40€ (45 Bucks) for parts and invested about 10 hours of labour, so I made a nice profit of it and had fun doing it.
