Long story short: I got a PC for A.I. research during Covid (i5 11400, 128GB RAM, RTX 3090) built by the very large IT department of my work. The pc only had a single 256GB 980 Pro to boot, as everything would be done through our servers.
The pc got decommissioned and I could basically just take it home (as a work from home pc), and I ended up installing an extra SATA SSD. Two clicks, and the pc turned off. Ended up reinstalling almost everything, but no cigar. At some point I removed the SSD and it booted again.
I don't have warranty on the the PSU (Focus GX-850) (as it officially belongs to my employer), but I ended up contacted SeaSonic myself who confirmed that Type-4 cables are for Corsair power supplies… Luckily they can send me replacement SATA power cables, but man I am happy they make power supplies with proper protections in place

Doesnt seasonic also make some of corsairs psus? Not saying this is fine. Just asking.

My friend graduated a few years ago with an “IT degree”. Another budget conscious friend was swapping out an hard drive so the IT friend went over and helped him. They used a cable from a different power supply and fortunately only fried the hard drive. It’s a mistake I would have made but man it was stupid.

Ebuyer, a pretty large UK retailer sent me an Antec PSU with Corsair, ASUS and Seasonic cables with no original antec cables
Offered me a £10 partial refund 🤦♂️

IT professional != computer technician.
IT is so vast with so many sub-areas that knowing hardware is almost useless in some of them.

Seasonic imo makes the best power supplies. IT pc building is entry level work don’t expect much from that.

Well thats the problem you had someone in IT work on your PC. Alot of IT staff dont know much about actually putting a computer together properly.
Literally saw a post the other day a kid asked if he was right if he need matching psu cables for his psu or not. He believed yes it needs to be for specific brand while his brother and father both in IT said the internet is wrong and idiotic and that all psu cables are universal!.
The connectors are already universal. Now the pinouts need to be!
They really should standardize the cables.
seasonic was gonna be my next psu. always hearing great things with them. was gonna say before reading i think type 4 is corsair. I have a rm850 or rmx850 and i think my cables say it on them.

It’s sad that PSU doesn’t have a wiring standard. It’s an anti consumer behavior.
Had someone bring me a system with a Corsair PSU with an EVGA SATA power cable. It had killed the SSD. Oddly it took some time to kill it. It wasn’t instantaneous… at least according to the customer.
I will say this though… as someone who has worked a lot of IT jobs, A LOT of people in IT don’t know shit about desktop hardware.
I know some companies use type 4 (under a different name). I’m not saying this psu uses it, or that the IT dude even knew there was differences. I’m just saying that some do. There is a compatability list somewhere.
How is this still a thing in 2024.
I can’t believe we still have consumer parts that if you plug in the wrong it can just brick your entire system.
