Linux is wild.
I had some hardware fail on me, I had no way to get windows onto a USB at the time to install on a new drive and all I had for a live bootable OS was some flavour of Ubuntu on the one USB stick I did have.
So I was sitting at the desktop in the live booted USB, I downloaded a windows ISO and wondering if I could format the USB I had booted from and make a bootable windows USB from it. Sure enough this had come up before in someone else’s world and there was clear instructions on how to not only create a ramdisk in memory while up and running but to pivot the entire OS I was running to this ramdisk. I am pretty sure it was pivot_root
You ever see the new Mad Max Fury Road or Furiosa movies where the engine fucks up and the blackthumb warboy assigned to fix it crawls down into the god damned engine bay to work on it while the war rig is flying down the highway being shot at? That’s what pivot_root is
It felt like some kinda Mission Impossible thing going on after I did that and formatted the USB since now if anything went fucktangular I had no OS to boot from at all. It worked though and I was chuffed. Helpful people those Linux users.

This gives me fictional serial killer vibes. In movies some serial killers would send messages with letters and words cut out of various books and newspapers to disguise the person.

They all have their place in my experience.
Windows – when you need to get a service up and running within an hour guaranteed and have it easily migrate-able and maintainable.
Linux – When you have a little more time to set things up (you WILL run into dependency issues) but your service needs to be absolutely rock solid and will never move and most likely never fail as a result. Also software compilation (fuck you windows defender, every single file access doesn’t need to be scanned during a compile leading to 10x longer compile times).
I say these specific examples due to a recent issue matching the above. Windows server 2022 running tftp failed to communicate and required a restart after 63 days of uptime. Linux box running tftp still responds perfectly after over 800 days uptime. I know why not just use the linux box then, it has to do with how our software transfers files around automatically for testing before deployment.

Linux needs more standardization. All the distros are cool and all but it leads to so many issues. We just need standards that are set in stone, that all distros follow.
Need a better installer. Your average user isn’t going to understand paks and terminal installations.

I would happily switch to Linux for daily-driving and use Windows in edge-cases like significantly better performance or windows-only anti-cheats in games that I play.
Unfortunately, I’m too lazy and uninspired right now to sift through all of my drives and decide how I should divide the space, how much to give to the Windows OS and most importantly, catalogue all the shit I have setup currently, backup settings files and migrate all of that to Linux…
I just know it will result in a week-long obsessive migration process that I will start to hate with passion about 70% through and will do sloppily after that thresgold just to be able to use my computer again. But God do I hate Windows! Maybe I’ll have enough balls to do the above some day.
