Intel stock cooler is notoriously shit, get literally any tower cooler for like 20-30 bucks and you’re good
floeddyflo
People are saying to get a new cooler, but the Intel stock cooler for a 2012 70W chip is adequate enough and shouldn’t be resulting in these temperatures. 100*C is too much for it to only be the stock cooler, maybe unless you’re also using a case with no airflow or fans whatsoever, which doesn’t make sense as you said you had the side of the case open. Can you check to make sure you haven’t properly mounted the cooler, or still have the sticker on the coldplate?

They’re probably right but… I’d invest in a new cooler or a better CPU if I was you in that case
dzordzLong
No … that is not OK.
Clean your cooler … vaccum it and remove GUNK from fins. Most likely full of lint.

This is a CPU from 11 Generations ago, launched Q2 2012. At this point it’s just fighting for survival.

For 50W that’s atrocious. For 30 bucks you can easily get something, that can cool anywhere between 150 and 220 W unless you have a really slim case. Thermalright is the current budget king, but honestly anything will work just fine.

My question is, why hasn’t it shut down. Don’t they normally hit the safety shutoff at 100c? Did you turn it off in the BIOS?

Turn the pc off pls

Whoever said it’s probably not the cooler’s fault might be right, did you make sure to mount it with enough pressure? Is the metal touching the cpu somehow not even?
Blunt552
Proabbly right, get a decent cheap cooler, no need for noctua etc. The 3770 is drawing very little by modern standards.
B4RLx
How does the 3770 hold up these days? What GPU you pairing with it?

Before you go and buy a new cooler, try repasting and make sure the cooler is screwed on nice and tight. Sometimes the paste can just dry out for whatever reason, or it might not have great contact. Clean out any dust on the cooler. Double check the fan is working.
How long have you noticed high temps like this? Do you know what temps you had before that?
Aggravating-Pace-855
Make sure you double check the mounting of the stock cooler I have seen many times where the plastic clips didn’t seat right, or have come undone from motherboard. The stock cooler should definetly be enough to keep the unit cool, the only reason I would say get a new cooler is that it would provide a more secure mounting platform.
Do you have case fans? If you do then leave the side panel on as it helps direct airflow. Otherwise just get a new cooler because stock coolers are ass on intel

A bit cold for a nuclear reactor

Unless you live in a desert, the stock cooler should not be performing that bad.
Check the following:
Double check the cooler. These can be a bitch to correctly mount if you’re inexperienced. This is the most likely situation.
ONLY DO THIS NEXT BIT IF YOU HAVE EXTRA THERMAL PASTE HANDY:
Remove the cooler and make sure the black plastic pin protector (The square thing that comes pre-installed on the motherboard socket) isn’t sitting between the CPU and cooler.
Make sure it’s got an adequate amount of thermal paste.

Intel stock cooler is a joke. Its already been said, but get a different cooler.
Noctua is probably overkill for such an old chip. Something like a Scythe Fuma 2/3 or Peerless Assassin would be much better for your budget while providing nearly as good cooling.

What cooler you using bro ?
Just new a CPU cooler.
Temperatures are right for frying.
Get a new cooler.
