After playing Ghost of Tsushima twice, I finally visited Tsushima Archipelago in Japan this summer. When I got back home I tried my best to line up the same perspective of photos I took inside the game & IRL.

That game’s a lot smaller than I thought

That is amazing, it must’ve been a surreal experience. Can’t believe you got photos that match the scenes so well, awesome job.

Unlike other video game series that recreate real world places extremely faithfully (GTA, TLOU, Assassin’s Creed, ), Tsushima never shared the same spotlight as “mainland” Japan in terms of culture & architecture or population. This lead SuckerPunch to take far more artistic liberty in portraying the island in the video game. I was surprised just how lush the island was. As you can see in the photos above the real world counterparts have more dense foliage covering it then bare rock. I learned a few things while being there. That foxes don’t exist on the island & never have (though boars certainly do). Funny enough the only fox on the island today a plastic fox inside the visitors center as a nod to the gamer tourists. Interestingly Tsushima Leopard cat is the islands most famous animal because they are near extinction. SP didn’t add it in the main game but did add it in the Iki island expansion. It also never snows in Tsushima & the entirety of the islands are all heavily forested. But these are nitpicks that the overwhelming majority of gamers will never notice or care about so SP focused more on creating the best in game environment they could to tell a memorable story rather than an exact recreation.
