Removing the frog and the duck was the worst change MS ever made to Windows

The XP startup sound is honestly the best out of all Windows.

The UI is insanely nostalgic. I can imagine booting up Battlefront 2, C&C Red Alert 2, AoE, logging in to RuneScape and getting IM’s on Myspace.

They weren’t good. Things ran on slow mechanical hard drives, we didn’t have Steam, Youtube or nice internet in general, PC building wasn’t anywhere near as accessible, standardized, safe and fun, XP was the first Windows that relatively wasn’t annoying to install, and, speaking of, you needed to do a clean Windows reinstall every year to avoid degrading stability and perfornance. Monitors were shit back then, too – 19″ CRT with 1600×1200 or a 720p 60hz TN with washed-out colors and nauseating response time were the high end. Games had DRMs like StarForce and SecuRom and the default multiplayer was freakin’ LAN.
I like today much better and I’m happy those days are gone.

Brings back memories of my first ever gaming PC. Was rocking a Radeon 4870. XP was epic.

Oh it cringed me so much after 95, 98, NT and dear 2K…
Startup progress bar was replaced by a meaningless loading animation.
They made default Windows color scheme and desktop look like a Teletubbies home or some tacky toy for toddlers.
Two-column Start menu was a crime against basic ergonoimics.
That rancid blue taskbar still making my eyes bleed…
Fortunately, all that crap back then could be easily turned off (unless I had to deal with other people’s PCs), and XP UI had some improvements over W2K.
But this is where degeneration of Windows UI truly began.
