I have external HDD with all CD copies of games from the past. I even have that version of Mafia game that your can’t by on Steam because in Steam you have versions with erased some music.
(If compatibility mode doesn’t work, spin up the OS you need to in a virtual environment)

I got an external and went on an installing old games binge session, and was surprised by just how few of them worked on Windows 10. Dark Messiah however worked perfectly, and it was an experience looking back on a game I could barely run when it was new, and always had in mind how incredible the graphics were. They’re alright for their age, and the game is a lot more fun above 10FPS.

Some platforms give you option to add the CD Keys.
I added all my Old EA Games on Origin/EA Play as well as Ubisoft games.
If you don’t have a key you can always buy an external disk reader

Losing your games/account because Ubisoft/Blizzard/Epic Games/Steam/Sony/Microsoft decides to enforce a part of their ToS that nobody read but can be interpreted in any way possible will cost way more.
Here is a little example: if i had only bought the digital version of games for my ps4/5, losing my account would cost more money in terms of games than buying a new ps5.

Heck, my school (before it closed) used to have a bunch of cases with a knockout for a drive (I don’t mean standard 5.25” plates, a dedicated optical drive slot that was unpopulated) to use as a demo for the computer literacy class, which pissed me off so much seeing the unpopulated slot, so I friggin donated an extra SATA DVD burner I had lying around that I didn’t need (most of the time I just put in an IDE card and use that for DVD-ROM drives)

I got my hands on an old laptop with a dvd drive that was ejectable. Turns out there is a an extremely cheap usb cord you can buy to hook those up to any computer.

If you have an older CD/DVD reader get some connectors to turn it into a USB CD reader.

This is why I have a $10 LG CD/DVD drive I bought brand new from a thrift store in 2016. It now has a giant gouge on it, but it still works great!

Honestly, I’ve never built a computer without an optical drive, and have zero reason to stop. Watching/Ripping 4k movies on my computer is fantastic. And being able to casually drop in my Diablo 2 discs for a quick install just feels good.

I simply cracked open a SATA USB HDD enclosure, took the PCB and connected it to my old internal LG DVD drive. Now it’s makeshift external.

My PC has a CD/DVD/HDDVD/BD drive in it. I just buy the case I need and I don’t see why people complain when the problems they have are their own fault. Want a disc drive? Buy an external or a case that can fit a disc drive.
Heck, I have a 200 CD changer that feeds its audio into my PC.
