For me – i5 14th generation. I’m not chasing super mega ultra realistic maximum settings. Medium, medium high settings are enough for me to get stable 65 – 75 frames. That’s all at a minimum.

I5 definitely.it will have way better single core performance while lacking some multi core performance but it will consume wayyyy less power since the only i9 7th gen were the x-series
Other_Spot_354
Isnt the earliest i9 for regular sockets the 9th gen? There is for LGA 2011-2 iirc, but yeah
Seroko
OF COURSE THE I9
This noobs… I just got an OP 8800GT while you’re still wanting the 4090.
Huh. 8800 >>>>> 4090 it’s so simple.

It has a nifty little tune.

The first desktop i9 was 9th Gen. Perhaps you’re talking about the HEDT processors, but a rookie builder isn’t likely to know about those.
I enjoy building HEDT systems… and I kinda’ miss them for the enthusiast mainstream. But for my personal machine, I’d rather have the 14th Gen i5 of the two.

R7 5700X3D beat I5 14th

i9 7th gen lol, good luck finding one of those (unless you are talking about LGA 2066 HEDT CPUs aka Skylake-X)
i9 branding for mainstream CPUs didn’t start until Coffee Lake-R (aka 9th gen).

5+14 is more than 9+7, it’s an obvious choice

i5 12th gen, thank you very much (Xeon E3-1225 V5)
Hardware naming scheme from all brands is terrible, yes.

not a rookie by about 30 years. but this one has an i5 12th gen and it does wonderful. should have done an i7 and a 3080 instead of an i5 and 3070, but oh well

Only if they knew i3 14th gen beats an i9 10th gen…

There’s no questions here, 14th will slap 7th. Was it 10-11 i9 – maybe there will be a question.

Intel’s naming convention sucks. Unless you’re the type that knows all the model numbers, there’s no way to infer which of any two random chips are the newer versions.

Would a 7980XE still be a good option for a high core count cpu for a relatively low cost? Or would an R9 3950X be a better bet? They seem to be very similar in price on Ebay right now.
