Hardware shrinkflation is real. How much money you think they saved by chopping off 1 cm? Bought the same product since I needed more. The pack i had from few years ago is longer then the new ones I got. Same asn/name/brand/company. 22cm -> 21cm

If hardware shrinkflation is real, how come GPUs keep getting bigger?

reminds me of that pic with 2 or 3 measuring tapes and one was like half an inch short at the start of the tape.

not much saving, but judging from the different strain relief, It could be that the device manufacturer changed suppliers (most likely for cost reasons) and the new supplier’s offered lengths are different?

bruh this is just a dumb post. they obviously just redesigned their cable (the ends of the cable have more plastic for more stress relief) and they just made it shorter in the process aswell and probably not intentional

It could just be qc inconsistencies. Maybe it was never meant to be that long. Or maybe its the short ones that are defective.

I’d also bet the materials used were also cheaper meaning they skimped on quality(skimpflation) on top of shrinkflation.

Is the hardware shrinkflation in the room with us right now?

Let’s say they had enough raw cable to make 10,000 22cm completed cables. Shortening the length by 1cm they can now make 10,475 complete cables.

My math is simplistic as there is always waste, but the premise is sound.

  9. Could your old cable have stretched slightly, and the new cables are also slightly shorter ?

  10. Depends on volume. If 1 cm of cable is 5 cents and they make 1 million of them they save $50k.

Maybe the cable are thechnically the correct length, they just changed the definition. In my last job we also made cables for our devices. You have length with plugs, without plugs and electrical length (the length of the wires inside). All lead to different cables. So they are screwing you while selling you the correct length.

That genuinely looks like a superior cable though
