I just noticed that cars are in 2d when you look from far away

Yes. This tweak was the source of many jokes.

It’s a pretty cool trick to save performance.

Various levels of detail in games are cool. I bet the city in the background isn’t 3D either, at least partially

Yup, in some roads you’ll see cars pop in and out, looks silly, GTA V is impressive because the traffic at a distance is 2d but the 2d sprite when you get close turns into the 3d model of the sprite

  4. It is one of the many things attributed to “level of detail” or LOD.

Without it, even a high end PC would struggle to render any reasonable amount of frames.

In short, LOD is aiming to reduce the amount of rendering work by **not** displaying things the player won’t notice. For distant objects it tends to have several levels of quality, depending on the distance.

Every game does it do some degree and if you read about games being “poorly optimized” it often refers to LOD being to high. If you have pop-ins it usually is to low.

In this case they replaced the cars’ 3D models with 2D sprites at long ranges.

When you’re driving they disappear as you approach them, too. It’s just a performance thing.

I noticed this when I was scouting the power thing with Panam

Yeah, it’s pretty common knowledge now
Was a meme back then but I lowkey roll with it, my laptop does not have the power to render every car a gazillion miles away that I don’t give an actual f about

  8. Non existent cars in fact, they’re not LODs. If you drive and reach the cars they dissappear when you are 200-300 m away instead of becoming an higher quality model, it is specially noticable in the badlands. It is maybe the sloppiest thing in Cyberpunk 2077 graphics. I’m ok with LODs, every game use them nowadays, but DON’T make fake LODs please…

It’s noticeable when you’re on a road and what looks like a traffic jam ahead of dozens of cars suddenly disappears

  10. You are about 4 years too late to the discussion.

Actually shows the attention to optimizing the game

I’ve experienced this when going fast enough on the highway as well, you can see fake 2d cars in front that just dissappear as you get closer, it’s a bit jarring I suppose.

I noticed that during a gig because i was going up stairs and just fell through the floor and got stuck in an invisible wall room. Got to take a nice look at the cars as they were basically the only things rendered.
