In light of the space requirements for BO6

  1. Now we need to open our PC for every game we install.

  2. Just7Pixel

or not a cheap ssd, maybe a discount on ssd? and you can stack them? and get a better one with a higher GB

  3. lolschrauber

I thought about this a lot. You’d still have to download a crap ton of files for patches and propably DLC and store it elsewhere though. They’d propably use the cheapest crap available and you’d not want to write on that a lot.

  4. since they would make less profit, it will never happen.

  5. Noob4Head

Honestly, I’m torn on this. On one hand, that’s a pretty solid idea, but on the other hand, I don’t want 100 SSDs laying around and constantly having to switch them out xD.

  6. Daoist_Serene_Night

what am i gonna do with 100 SSDs?

  7. epicking983

When you can fit 25GB on a $1 blu ray disk how can you possibly justify shipping games on SSDs

  8. LordBaconXXXXX

    Wish granted.

    Now the games are 120$

  9. SoulfoodSoldier

Fuck no they shouldn’t lmfao we have enough e waste why the fuck would you waste a gajillion SSDs for titles that get dumped when the next 400gb cod drops a year later? Just straight dumb as fuck sorry.

  10. outerproduct

Yet another reason not to play the cod games.

  11. liguinii

“gamers voiced their concerns and we listened, now our games will only be available through our own game store.”

  12. TheTimeIsChow

So many reasons why this shouldn’t be the case.

Mainly – Video games have been retailing in the $60-$70 price range for the past ~20 years now.

Moving away from physical sales and going to digital has been partially responsible for justifying this price plateau. Both on the publishers side and the consumer. They make more in the long run per sale, we see less price hikes if any over time. Maybe we haven’t seen price decreases… but at least they aren’t going up.

Shipping games, even on cheap ssd’s, would ramp up price hikes all over again. Not just with the hardware cost, but also logistics. Games would easily go from $60-$70 up to $100. Money which you could have just saved and spent to upgrade your personal drive.

Also – Who wants to game off cheap SSD’s worst than what they probably already have? You would be spending hundreds, likely thousands, to have a great gaming PC… only to get your game on a barebones SSD, undoubtedly encrypted so it can’t be used for anything else, that bottlenecks it all.

  13. Deathsand501

Ffs can we stop with the blatant misinfo? The 300 gigs are for the entirety of CoD HQ. Aka MW3, WZ and BO6 in their entirety.

I’m convinced it’s actual bots upvoting this lmao

  14. tactical_anal_RPG

Ah yes, I also love shipping millions and millions of cheap SSDs every year when new games get announced. I love producing copious amounts of waste for something with about a 1 year life span.

  15. RexorGamerYt

Not happening. remember, you’re playing 70 bucks for digital and 70 bucks for physical. DIGITAL SHOULD cost less, but NO IT’S THE SAME. That’s just free profit for them.

  16. TrickyWoo86

I made a similar post in the MW subreddit 4 years ago, this is definitely an opportunity for an open hot-swap cartridge standard.

  17. misssa_cz

he is onto somethin, i think hes right but at the same time wrong

  18. That’s one of those things that I wished for when DVD became too small for most games and updates, DLCs became more frequent and bigger.
I thought about USB sticks or „DownloadStations“ in Supermarkets (e.g) where you could go, stick in your USB drive and move Steam games on it. (Including whatever DRM measures would be deemed necessary, security risks, etc. considered…)

Nowadays, with acceptable internet speed (yes, even in Germany, 1Gibt fiber at parents / 1Gbit cable at my place) it’s become less relevant.

If, there is something I’m missing, it would be support from Steam, GOG, Rockstar and others for Selfhosting.
I‘d really would like to see a e.g. Docker image that hosts something like a Steam proxy. Similar to the already available function to receive updates from Systems in your network, your NAS / Homeserver, whatever would download games, patches by DLC for you, the moment they are available.

The moment your PC goes online and starts Steam, it would recognize the locally available server and instead of querying online servers, your NAS would provide the newest updates for you installed software. With network speed (10G fiber at home is actually quite cheap… or at least not that expensive).
Likewise it could serve as a backup for gamefiles in case you are offline, but still have local network available.

    TL/DR;
No cartridges, USB sticks or similar for me, but an officially supported NAS proxy.

  19. LifeIsBetterDrunk

No, but 4 to 16 TB drives should become cheaper and more mainstream

  20. Sno_Wolf

“like CDs where”, and then you just trail off. Where were the CDs? Where did the CDs used to be? Where CD? Why CD? How CD?

  21. TeciorRibbon

Crap 500GB game + $20 = Cheapest way to get SSDs

  22. Spuigles

    LETS GO BACK TO CARTRIDGE.

Cant wait to own these game in real life 😮

  23. That_Cripple

early contender for dumbest post of the week

  24. KingLuis

ok, so an SSD. now you have to have multiple motherboard slots for every game. so lets fix that, put USB-C ports or a hub that these SSD (external drives connect to). now limiting the speed of transfer rate. but lets leave it there, you still need to install the game onto your internal SSD so you have access to it and it’s now working with your OS. it’s basically the console situation with CD/DVDs. you buy the disc, it installs because the transfer rates are not fast enough.

you could also just buy a 2TB SSD and download the game.

  25. hardrivethrutown

Hotswap 2.5″ bay on future cases… Games come on 2.5″ SSDs like cartridges… Honestly I think it would be pretty cool lol

  26. upholsteryduder

    a 1TB SSD is $50-70…

Just get one for nothing but games and stop worrying about it

  27. DenseUpstairs8916

This man got pissed and IS splitting facts

  28. Vinstaal0

What game are we talking about? And what requirements?

  29. Regeditmyaxe

Or just don’t buy the games that have 300 gb file sizes.

  30. ghostfreckle611

Careful what you wish for… Watch them ship on usb 2.0 thumb drives…

  31. SignalGladYoung

    For context;

Cyberpunk 2077 with DLC is only around 70-100GB.

  32. Musician-Round

I agree with the idea in spirit, but I don’t think that I’d want to have to open up my case and use up an SSD drive space for one game. We’re entering a new generation of gaming, that’s for sure.

My personal hope is that this surge in memory requirements will lead to advancement in SSD technologies so that we can finally start getting some 50TB, maybe even 100TB drives on the market at affordable prices.

  33. theDaniLand

Fuck It at least give me flashdrive or keychain or anything physical. If the price for digital copy is the same as a physical copy I would prefer to have some shitty material thing in my hands, give me a poster or a fidget Spinner.

  34. tht1guy63

    >They should come in a cheap SSDs’ just like CDs’ where

    Where what
