I have been planning for a year or two to delid my 5YO 8700k and finally did it today.

Found out today the only delidding tool that was available in my region I purchased 2 years ago had no option to relid the CPU, only delid. Nice.

Now here’s where I started brainstorming how do I relid this CPU (maybe I shouldn’t have brainstormed and waited for another 10 months to buy the der8auer delidding tool but noooooo) and came upon the brilliant solution of using my microphone arm’s clamp as the relidding tool.

I’m currently leak testing my custom loop and haven’t started the PC yet.

On a scale of 1-10, how likely am I to be blessed by the PCMR gods and this works?

I’ll keep you guys updated with the results. :’)

Other than the life achievement, and bonus points towards % completion, what do you hope to achieve here?

Relidding, what’s that? Shorten the cooler mount and raw dog that CPU die. #YOLO

Idk, I delidded my 12700k just to repaste it. Didn’t feel like I was doing something to be so damn worried about. It’s just maintenance. I got comfortable doing that with my gaming laptop and haven’t had any issues maintaining my pre-built. Eventually I’m gonna get a new mobo/cpu/case. That’s gonna be when the real fun begins.

  4. Delidding an i5-3570K got me almost 20%.

I could get its max clocks to 4.1 GHz (stock 3.4 GHz, so 20.5% uplift) with the stupid lid on, and 4.52 GHz without, so 32.9%.

I remember trying to work out what was holding me back. The cooler was good for well over 150 watts (had it there with a Phenom II X4 955 BE), but here was this Ivy Bridge hitting thermals at just 4.1 GHz. Other people were getting 4.3 to 4.4 out of it, and power was only at 98 watts, but there it was slamming into the 95C wall.

Taking the lid off, changing nothing else (other than cooler mounting, natch), got me 4.52 GHz at 85C, with a power of 130 watts.

Intel’s lids really were that bad.
