Hey guys!

First off, let me apologise for my complete ignorance here. I’m new to gaming computers and looking for something for my stepson.

I came across the computer in the screenshot attached and I was wondering if this would be a good starting point?

He has an Meta Quest 2 and I’m hoping he could stream from the computer to this through Steam Link.

Would the specs of that computer be any good for this? Would there be much limitation to the games he could run?

I’m hoping that it’s something he can build on and upgrade as he goes, so it doesn’t need to be perfect to begin with, just usable.

Thanks in advance for your help, I appreciate it.

Hello LyricalLyca, and thank you for your submission to Gaming PC! If you are new please check out our rules over at the wiki [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/gamingpc/wiki/rules)!
We have recently added the useful feature of Title Flair! You can set this manually by clicking Flair under your post once you have submitted your post, but if you missed it in the rules there is a much better way that will automatically flair your post!

To do this simply add what your post is about in brackets before your title. For example for a Build Log you can type [Build Log] before your post so that it looks like this; [Build Log]My new awesome build!, and the bot will automatically set your flair to Build Log! This works for Build Log, Build Showcase, News, Hardware News, Hardware Release, Discussion, and Miscellaneous!

Also remember that this is a place for discussing and sharing our love of Gaming Computers! This is NOT the place for help building or determining what parts you should buy, that is better suited for /r/buildapc. Troubleshooting questions should be directed to /r/techsupport. Thank you again!

Specs are not good, but for 150, I’d say it’s actually quite fair

  3. It’s not good.

I understand you probably want to save a quick buck but its a universal rule of life that you get what you pay for. Especially at that price, used. The components are anywhere from 9 to 12 years old. I mean if we go by the literal interpretation of ‘usable’, sure, it can be used. For his VR headset though? It doesn’t even meet the *minimum* specs (and meeting minimum specs is a wild ride. It varies anywhere from “this is useable at the lowest settings and expectations” to “it will literally open the game before crashing, so yeah usable minimum!”)

It’s ancient hardware on a dead socket and old motherboard (unlisted specs for a lot of stuff, including the PSU, but thats because the seller knows its garbage) so there is no upgradeability to be had here.

If you want to go cheap and let him upgrade over time, then buying on the AM4 platform is fine. You can buy older CPUs like the 3000 series Ryzen on a B550 Motherboard platform, which will be more than good until he needs to upgrade to the 4000 series, and even the 5000 series, which puts out (to this day) top of the line CPUs for modern gaming. YMMV with older motherboards, however, as MOBOs earlier than the B550 will not support the 5000 series, but they will support older Ryzen CPUs (I’m talking Zen or Zen+)

Can get a fairly cheap B550 Motherboard with 16Gigs of DDR4 RAM (32 would be better, but again, he can always buy two sticks in the future when he wants to upgrade if he feels he needs more headroom) on a 3000 series Ryzen CPU. From there you can get a halfway decent GPU for cheap. On this platform, your stepson will be able to upgrade his CPU multiple times over the years and will be able to simply slot in a new GPU every time he needs to upgrade without having to do much else (other than wipe and install drivers).

If you’re looking at buying the entire PC used online, then it’s probably good to do some due diligence and make sure it can at least meet the minimum spec and the GPU series is listed as supported here: [https://www.meta.com/help/quest/articles/headsets-and-accessories/oculus-link/requirements-quest-link/?utm_source=www.tomsguide.com&utm_medium=oculusredirect](https://www.meta.com/help/quest/articles/headsets-and-accessories/oculus-link/requirements-quest-link/?utm_source=www.tomsguide.com&utm_medium=oculusredirect)
