My edit of this trailer features clips from the original 1979 anime the Gundam originally appeared in along with the original opening theme ‘Fly! Gundam!’
Despite how the old anime looks compared to other series today and since, it was groundbreaking for its time, inventing the ‘Real Robot’ genre of anime and paving the way for many mecha and robot shows. To this day, it’s a cultural icon in Japan, on par with how, say, Star Wars is in the west.
Despite first impressions, the anime actually tells a slightly more nuanced take on the idea of piloting a giant robot; it’s not about beating the bad guys, or fighting for ‘justice’ and ‘truth’. It’s a war story, featuring a child soldier slowly learning that, in war, no side can be considered ‘right’ or ‘wrong’. The main antagonists, the Principality of Zeon, are explicitly space colonists for their independence from the Earth Federation, who are shown to be corrupt and greedy as the show goes on.
It’s a rather unique little show! Find somewhere to watch it if you have time!

The skins looks goofy… I am a fan and still won’t buy them.
They should have stuck to the mechanical design instead of trying to add tacticool and realism. We have Groot running around with no plate carriers or ammo pouches, why does a robot need them…
