Nah that new $99 sound blaster does work. Makes everything sound soooo much better! I had an old asus xonar in my previous PC for years.
Serious question: what do these even do outside of professional audio work environments?
I had soundblaster in my build and returned it at the end of return windows, because somehow card was going to sleep when inactive and when woke up speakers were farting until I reset the whole pc. I found some posts about similar issue either blaming soundblaster or x570 motherboards. Sound quality was delicious but wasn’t worth the headache. No more.
I do have a sound card! I don’t actually use it for outputting audio, though; rather, I use it to record digital audio *inputs* that aren’t from an HDMI source. Trust me, it’s a lot nicer to bother with that than it is with analog audio if you’re given the choice.
Had a asus xonar phoebus solo installed not too long ago but since i wanna switch to linux i had go get rid of it because there s just no support for that thing. And no audio sucks.
Went with a fiio k11 dac amp, still gotta test if that works but i d guess so since it doesnt require windows drivers
Personally, if you want to spend money on an upgrade I’d always suggest just using a external DAC/amp, ideally mounted to the underside of your desk just to the left of where you sit. Headphone jack and volume control all within easy reach, PC internals less cluttered, audio source well away from electrical noise.
I bought the same card and loved the quality over the onboard, but really wanted the controller thing to auto switch to headphone/mic without toggling the settings in Windows when plugging in. It interferes with my PC components (x570s) and creates a constant slight static/hum that I can’t live with these days.
Ended up with a $200 Schitt stack and some powered Kantos with the sub. Really no need to go any further I think.
I too have the AE-7 my brother, and I would never play a game again without it! The Crystallizer makes everything sound so cleeeeeeean.
Last one I had was a bit weird. Sure it was a creative one. Kept having an auto gain control issue and whatever I did ( I have done music on both Mac and windows along with old skool Amiga and Atari back in the day ) and never fixed it. Shortly afterwards I just bought an external audio interface for the music mac and left hdmi and optical for game audio on the pc.
I just use hdmi out on my gpu to a dolby atmos amp.
nice dude. some newer sound cards are expensive these days but that’s for pro work with expensive sound system or premium studio headphones.

It’s not about paying homage. Literally there are different types of DAC , bit rates, frequency responses etc and different sound boards all process these in various ways. You will only notice the difference if you’re actually plugging into high quality speakers or headphones

Honestly, i am trying to keep as little parts inside as possible for proper airflow, especially if case supports fans at the bottom.
I have a Sound Blaster xfi that I’ve been using for the past 15 or so years. I recently had to remove it though because I couldn’t fit my new video card.

The two things I hated dealing with when first building PCs back in the stone ages … not having onboard network and sound! Nobody could share IRQ’s for crap. Anyway, not an audiophile … but I can’t tell the difference? I’m sure it can be measured … but not by my ears. Onboard sound has never once made me think I am missing out on anything.

I tried one of those with my wife’s computer to try to fix the issues she was having. Constant BSOD’s over and over and had to remove it…
I do miss them. I grew up with a Soundblaster 16 then a MWAVE Card from IBM then a Sound Blaster Audigy. But yes all boards have decent sound processing built in now. There’s use cases for DAC’s and more audiophile equipment of course if you want that.
I set up a dual boot on my PC so I can run 32-windows for my Yamaha Sw1000xg card
Nope, but I’m rocking a new mid North with a pair of JBL LSR305’s and their sub. Those parts being my favourite of the setup as well =D
Bought a new PC, dunno what to do with it.. mostly playing old games, and more excited about the case with it’s sound reacting RGB’s and as always the beautiful JBL’s. I never got to own an internal sound card but don’t generally use headphones anyways unless I’m voice chatting which is not often. But could be a worthwile future investment tbh.

i did crazy stuff with sound blaster in the mid 90’s wish id stuck with that and produced some weird music
I do have a sound card but only because I broke my on board audio somehow. Much cheaper than a new mobo.

Using GPU soundcard as HDMi can use Dolby Atmos together with Receiver.. Sound blaster have only ancient connectors who won’t support’s it..
I been digging in that deeper and licensing to have HDMI is too expensive..
I got myself one of those. It makes everything very loud so now i keep it at 15% volume….
But i can easily localise sound sources in game now and there waaaay much more detail.
I’ve legit noticed games lag when trying to play a sound. Probably not as big a problem now with solid state drives, and I’ve never tested for a difference with a sound card, but just for the sake of being thorough, my next rig will have one. I’ve promised myself my next rig wont lag for years to come, so I’m gonna definitely go overboard.
No but I do have a Bluetooth/ wifi card in mine.
I don’t even know what I would do with a sound card anymore. I don’t use the sound output from my computer at all. I run hdmi to the tv and the speakers using earc. It sounds good and it was very simple to get setup.
I’ve had an Asus Xonar D2 coupled with SRS Audio Essentials forever. Both works just fine on windows 10 22h2 however I suspect newer cards or better sound configurations may provide a better sound experience I just haven’t bothered to look into changing. Any suggestions?
