
AIO pump failed so CPU overheated and crashed, turned it back on as I hadn't realized it had overheated and left it on for about 15 seconds before noticing CPU was at 108°C so turned it straight off. Put a spare CPU cooler on and no signs of life, swapped a different cpu in and cooler boots right up. V sad 👍

normally cpu have safety limits and wont self kill.
For future reference, you can set your bios to warn you if a fan fails (or AiO in this case)

This is strange. I haven’t heard of a modern CPU actually dying from runaway thermals without enabling things like LN2 mode in the BIOS.

That’s odd. I thought modern CPUs/motherboards had a failsafe for critical temperatures? It should’ve either clocked way down to keep the temps within limits or at worst, shut the system down.
Welcome to the master race platform. It won’t be the first time you’ll experience something like this if you’re using it long enough. Over 30 years of PC usage across many different gaming rigs/PC laptops/Apple MacBooks/minis, my first AIO GPU ended up malfunctioning long before any air cooled GPUs I ever had. Premium does not always mean premium/longevity.
factory settings or overclocked? Modern cpu’s have thermal throttle it would sacrifice performance to not goa bove that temperature limit. I assume it was either faulty or you messed with it somehow
Had my 5600x fail on me last month. Never even overclocked it. Just straight up failed, and it was only like a year old. Weird. Thermals were always fine too.
Can we just stop using aio unless really necessary? More to fail for literally zero gain.

Weird that it killed it, should have just throttled like mad and shut off.
Had a similar situation when I built a rig with a 6700k, overheated and shut down before it could boot and would sit at 90c in the BIOS.
CPU survived and still provided many years of service with a hefty overclock.
For anyone curious, my issue was the motherboard had a DOA fan header, which happened to be the one the pump was connected to.
Front right corner pins are bent. Look how it sits on that cloth. RIP

Any idea why the pump failed? As others have said the CPU should throttle and even shut down if it overheats. Any chance the AiO leaked at the block and some of the fluid dripped into the socket? I’d give it a good look to make sure there’s no residue left.
That should of killed the cpu as the voltage would’ve throttled back

To others saying their ‘insert any 5000 series Ryzen CPU here’ just randomly died one day, it’s almost indisputably due to a silicon defect that still hasn’t been fully addressed to this day by AMD. I work as a diagnostics and rework specialist in the RMA / Warranty repair fulfillment field in the U.S. and we’ve seen enough dead / dying 5000 series Ryzen CPU’s since they originally launched to know it’s not ‘a coincidence’.
The primary symptoms range from the system getting stuck in a never ending pre-boot check and losing the ability to pass and actually POST, memory data signal degradation and then channel failure (starts with seemingly random WHEA errors and gets progressively worse), thermal sensor failure, and core(s) or entire CCD’s degrading faster than normal over time and then dying (this is to no surprise exacerbated by having PBO / CPB enabled on affected chips).
Now this isn’t to fearmonger and say that every single Ryzen 5000 CPU will suffer this fate as there are plenty of them out there that have been running soundly for years since they either have or don’t have defective silicon, but there have been enough of these cases that I’ve personally seen and others have made accounts of over the years that I feel it’s worth mentioning anyways to raise awareness as this was brought to light as far back as ~2020 but is rarely ever brought up.
Sorry for your luck, OP. Contact AMD and they should get you taken care of if you issue a RMA request with them. If they ask if the CPU was ever manually overclocked or had overclocking features like PBO enabled on it at any time tell them you’ve had it running stock since the day you installed it into your system as they can void your warranty if they see fit if you tell them otherwise.

I had this exact same problem about 3 weeks ago. CPU instantly went to 90° – 100° when turning PC on. I tried a couple time before realizing the watercooling must be busted. Got a new cooler, CPU is still fine. Guess you were just really unlucky?
Are you sure it’s dead? Cpus have pretty good protections. 100c isn’t good for it, but it shouldn’t immediately die. This isn’t bulldozer.
It sure looks to me like that chip isn’t sitting level on your table, the 2 corners left and right are clearly raised, but the one nearest the camera appears to be lower. Did you bent things?
I’m glad I’m not the only one here that’s accidentally broken something in my PC recently.
I accidentally spilled my coffee into the top of my tower, which then went through the fans. And then I didn’t wait for it to dry off before plugging it back in and turning it on.
Motherboard is fucked and the spare motherboard doesn’t have an AM4 socket, so now I’m in dual core hell again.
