I built a pc when I was a teen about 5 years ago. It was relatively high end at the time (rtx 2070 and 9700k). It had a cooler master AIO which has this cool red glowing affect. I gamed on this thing a lot, but it always got hotter than I thought it should. Got up to 90c consistently when starting and playing high performance games, but it didn’t really bother me that much I guess. Finally, today I decided to check it out. I thought the increasing temperatures were from the AIO going bad or something so I bought a Be Quiet Pro 5 air cooler. When I took the old AIO off, to my horror, I realized my teen self had LEFT THE STICKER THAT SAYS “WARNING REMOVE BEFORE APPLYING” on the copper contact point. For the next 15 minutes I kept cursing at myself wondering how could I have been that stupid back then. That thing had been on there causing thermal throttling for 5 years. I repeat, 5 years. I’m surprised this thing is still alive

Also, don’t get me started on the thermal paste application

Sometimes we learn lessons because we catastrophically fuck something up, and sometimes we learn lessons realizing how close we were instead.

Your CPU and that Cooler deserve some serious commendation.

  3. This should be the post we send everyone to when they think their CPU is going to melt and die because it goes above 80 when doing stress testing. Unless there is something wrong with your hardware, you’re not going to damage it by undercooling it. You could probably run this for another 5 years without any issues aside from thermal throttling.

The good news is you just gave yourself a free performance upgrade.

  5. Manufacturers should make it bright red already.

OP you need to update with temps update!

    How far did they fall?

Kind of amazing that CPU’s are so well made today, 5 years and still working. In the old days if the cooler was not on the CPU just burned away, I may be showing my gray hair.
