Ah, the GameBoy! A classic choice for a charming adventure.

I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying NSO GameBoy! It’s always fun to revisit those classic games and relive the nostalgia.

I miss when Mario games did weird shit like the Gameboy games. The series is too safe and predictable now.

I didn’t finish this as a kid but the soundtrack is hard to forget. Muda Kingdom theme slaps!

Back in the day playing Mario on the gameboy was so ass. It’s not like the NES and SNES were realistic, but man, did Super Mario Land 2 show that there was zero excuse for the first Mario Land to look like that lol

Such a fun game! And it’s awesome to see it make its way to the Switch!

The funny thing is, this game has not aged well. It’s not BAD by any means, but it’s like 15 minutes to beat and the controls are really stiff and weird. It’s charming as you said, but definitely an example of them still getting a handle on the new hardware.

Mario Land 2, though… THAT’S the good stuff.

  8. Glad to see this finally released on Nintendo Switch Online. Now when’s Sonic the Hedgehog 1 coming?

I think this is the first and only box art that had Mario looking completely fed up with all the crazy instead of his usual maniacally happy vibe.

I played this game constantly as a kid. It was my first mario game. Wow the soundtrack was great, every kingdom.

This was one of my favorite Gameboy games as a kid. I loved the submarine level.

I always found it so frustrating that once you moved to the right, you couldnt move back. Was that the whole game, or just certain levels?

I don’t think I ever managed to complete it! Or the second one, which I enjoyed much more but always got stuck on the final castle 🙁

  13. MonstersinHeat

This is one of my favorite games because it’s like a Mario game from an alternate reality where physics and the world are skewed in a delightful way.

  14. Turbo_Chet

This was the first videogame I got introduced to by my Dad. I would see him playing it on the gameboy all the time. We both ended up beating it after so many failed runs and the sense of accomplishment I can still feel to this day.

  15. Great game, lots of memories playing this at the grandparents as a child. Thanks for this.

Second game I ever finished. The first being kirby’s dreamland. I love them both still.

Its even better on emulator. Nostalgia, for no cost.

It’s the second game I’ve ever finished. About 30 years ago, I saw a couple of neighborhood friends watching a kid I didn’t know play this game. I told them I could finish it, but they didn’t believe me since we all came from families who couldn’t afford a Game Boy. The kid let me try, and I did manage to finish the game. What they didn’t know was that I used to borrow a classmate’s Game Boy. She had relatives in Germany who brought her expensive gifts every summer, and I would return it to her with fresh batteries. By then, I was pretty much able to speed-run the game.

I can’t remember why, but I think I hate the flying head.

  21. I remember being stoked when I got to the point I could beat the whole game on the bus ride to school.

  22. Played the hell out of this as a kid. I watched a walk through of it some years ago and the nostalgia hit me so hard.

  23. kammerfruen

I have fond memories of this game.

It was the first game I got for my Gameboy and I was probably 9 years old. My mother always stole the gameboy from my bedside table after I went to bed, so she could play before she went to bed.

She completed the game before me and enjoys reminding me of this whenever the topic of video games comes up in conversation.

  24. loztriforce

I recall hating how differently it handled control-wise vs on the NES and how tiny everything was, but it grew on me.

The vehicle levels were certainly a pleasant surprise.

  25. ExcitableNate

All 3 of the games in this series are absolute bangers. Gameboy was the shit, and my first ever console. The big ass gray one that you could beat a man to death with.
