If this is true, I think what makes me more angry is the fact that it took profit losses to realize this. No one ever will be surprised that a publisher prefers profits over customer satisfaction. That being said we, and more often than not are faithful customers to the publishers we love. I've just had enough and that's why I have stopped Consol gaming about a decade ago, I hated some of my friends played on PlayStation some on Xbox and we couldn't ever all be together without dropping the equivalent to a pretty good gaming PC to have both.
We want cross play, and for Consol exclusive needs to take a damn hike.

But if your friends play on console and you’re on PC then cross play is still an issue. PC didn’t solve your problem.
Square will still find a way to bitch and moan about profits failing. Rather than making a good game they want to make three okay games and then hope everyone buys it separately then in the one big bundle later down the road.
Now if only they’d also drop their epic exclusivity
I think it’s safe to say Squenix is a pretty mismanaged company. This is a step in the right direction. Crossplay will still be an issue, but KH being an EGS exclusive is baffling. For most people this equates to not on PC.
Sony is honestly anti consumer. High profile exclusives, tight contracts, minimal backwards compatibility, vehemently against crossplay…

Okay, but the devs say it takes way longer to optimize on multiple platforms. It’s not as simple as just copy pasting the source code like most people seem to think. If it was that easy why do other PS exclusives going to PC have so much trouble with quality?
Haven’t even started on the ultimate crutch that is the Xbox Series S. How is Rebirth supposed to play on that? 30 fps and 480p? Microsoft is at fault for mandating every game be playable on the S. They should let 3rd party devs to make games just for the Series X and let first party deal with the S.
Then you have the switch which can’t run anything modern without even more extreme nerfing.
All this for sales that would probably barely match the exclusivity money considering everyone has a hate boner for SE due whatever 8+ year complaint they think is still ongoing.
Square has a 2 fold problem they (predictably) ran into.
First, their onslaught of mobile games are low quality trash and they aren’t making any money and cannot keep userbases. They are putting no effort or care into them which is giving similar returns from users. They need to actually focus on making a game fun THEN monetization.
Second, epic game store and Sony are giving big payments to maintain exclusive titles but SEs math is now showing that EGS and Sony aren’t paying enough to justify that. Read that as PC, Xbox and Switch would be larger profits than continuing to let Sony pay to be exclusive.
In a personal opinion on this, Sony is starting to exclusive itself to death in regards to 3rd party companies. Square has no reason or obligation to give Sony such a stranglehold when PC is a massive avenue, Xbox has a dedicated user base on game pass and switch is the most owned console on the planet. I think you’ll see any 3rd party company watch SE and see how it fares outside of Sony.

This is the same company that took what should have been a slam dunk (FF Pixel Remaster) and somehow managed to make uglier than previous iterations and then take like 3 years to fix the shitty font and port it over to Switch.
And now they’re saying that the FF XVI PC version is release date: IDK because apparently porting from x86 (PS5) to x86 (PC) is a Herculean task?
Don’t even get me started on how they somehow managed to torpedo Deus Ex after only 2 games…
Alot of people (especially Paul Tassi) don’t realize SEs profits come from their mobile games and XIV. This year has been a trainwreck for mobile as they just shut down 4 games and announced an EoS for Nier in the future. On top of that XIVs subs #s are down 11%, while indeed it is the end of an expansion when it usually drops off, they just added Xbox support so the drop was even worse likely due to the lukewarm post msq content over the past 2 years. SE dug themselves a whole and expected Sony to dig them out.
You fail to mention Nintendo exclusives which Square had more than Sony, 9 vs 6.

Exclusivity is designed to sell consoles and platforms. Square Enix isn’t in the business of selling either of those, they are in the business of selling games. It does not make financial sense for them to have any games exclusive to a single platform. SE will make more money selling every game on every platform it can run on.

At this point, it doesn’t matter. Square isn’t really benefitting from exclusivity, only Sony to sell consoles.
I absolutely love the Final Fantasy franchise. It’s my favorite franchise of all time. FF7 has been my favorite game since the first time I played it on the PS1 demo disc. I’ve played most every game, seen the movie in theaters, gone to multiple live concerts. When Remake was announced I just about cried I was so happy (especially after the PS3 demo test came out). My PS4 died right before Remake came out and I had to fork out for a brand new PS4 Pro which I was happy to do at the time because I had money to spend. After beating it I couldn’t wait til the next one came out. Then they announced it was PS5 only. I still haven’t touched it to this day. I could not justify paying for a brand new PS5 just to play it especially with money being tight these days. I can’t imagine how much they lost in sales because people like me couldn’t justify the console cost just to play it early. Removing the exclusivity is absolutely the right move.
