Square Enix Will Aggressively Pursue a Multiplatform Strategy

Seems a little obvious. If you sell a game on more platforms, you will likely get far more sales.

  2. LucasBouyoux

I am not really surprised when you see the financial opportunity this represents

  3. InilyxStudio

This way it reaches the maximum amount of players

Square can suck a dick. Did the money from the low SONY numbers didn’t pan out for you? Or was it the NFTs? Now when they need something they do this. I say fuck em

Waiting for the new ff7 remake to hit PC. No way I’m gonna play it on ps5 with the blurry 60hz mode.
Edit: Why are you downvoting me? I’m right.

Watch them continue the final fantasy exclusivity and complain they are losing money still

I mean, they probably should unless they hate money.

It’s bizarre to me that the first Octopath Traveller isn’t on PSN, for example.

  8. This is why comments (during the Activision acquisition) by people saying how Sony was no better than Microsoft when FF7 is PlayStation exclusive were asinine.

Square Enix is an independent company and they can shift gears and change their strategy if exclusivity does not make sense anymore. Sony doesn’t own Square and can’t dictate how Square works or lays off Square’s employees.

Activision / Bethesda / etc on the other hand are now completely owned by Microsoft and hence completely tied to the corporate strategy of MS rather than being able to do what they would have done had they stayed independent.

I’m amazed it’s taken Square Enix that long to realize the need for multi-platform releases. Capcom had already been doing that back in the 1990s and the quality of their multi-platform releases has just gotten better over the years. Square Enix has got lots of catching up to do in that department.

It’s needed with rumors that Rebirth bombed. I’ve been a big Final Fantasy fan, especially within the golden era of VI – X, but I was a bit disapointed in how bloated the Remake was with so many pointless cutscenes and filler content. The pacing of the original VII is so much better. On top of that I read how mindlessly easy and cutscene heavy XVI is.

Here is to hoping the Steam release of Rebirth sells well, I plan on buying it on there.

  11. They found out that Sony exclusivity isn’t enough.

Bear in mind that making any game exclusive gets the developers a big cash bonus up front from the publisher. This money is usually put into **creating** the game, which is why companies like exclusivity. Higher sales are great, obviously, but those fund *future* developments, not the current one.

The yearly SE financial losses take the bag into account, though, and there’s no question that poor sales of the game are directly related to poor sales of the PS5. I have money to burn and I still won’t bother buying another Sony dust collector. My PC can run FF16 and FF7 RB twice as well as a console, whenever they come out. I can continue to wait.

That’s cool. So when is the kingdom hearts collection moving from Epic to Steam?

I’m still hoping we get news about Rebirth on PC after this month since it was a disclaimer on their marketing.

Could be nothing, could be another 2 years. But still hoping for sooner since it technically could be.

I bought a PS4 for their exclusives, back before they were coming to PC… but that console collected too much dust to justify doing that again with PS5. Especially now that they do come to PC. I ended up rebuying them on PC anyway.

Let’s see if it’s too late for that or not.

Bunch of shitty ports aren’t going to solve their issues. They better make sure that if you’re going multiplatform, they actually deliver good products on all platforms.

  16. n0_gods_no_masters

FF7 Remake is still ps5 console exc… maybe bring it to xbox series?

  17. bibomania

Well, it didn’t help also that the game was a filler episode of an anime, with mostly minigames rather than combat and story. Honestly, you could sum up the story of Rebirth in a 1h YouTube video.

  18. Playstation might actually have to try make games now instead of paying their way to still having some exclusives for PS5

(without FF, PS5 real exclusives that worth buying is just Spiderman 2, and even then…)

  19. praefectus_praetorio

    Download the Square Enix launcher.

  20. We’re in in 1997 where people want to buy consoles… majority of your fanbase is on PC ready for months to get this port then the hype dies. Make it multi-platform stop fucking around Square.

  21. Quadrax44x

Platform exclusivity doesn’t really make sense anymore if your studio isn’t owned by Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft. Even Atlus and Sega learned that. Now it’s squares turn

  22. HendricksonT182

Exclusives drive the industry, without them consoles are useless.

  23. BrahamWithHair

Hopefully they will. I would have bought FF16, if it was released on the pc when it came out. Now ive already seen multiple streamer playthroughs so i dont think i will buy it anymore

It’s weird this is the takeaway from this meeting. Square also revealed a ton of cancellations and that they’re only going to focus on in-house, bigger franchises going forward. To me, the bigger news here is that games like Star Ocean, Octopath Traveler, Bravely Default, The World Ends With You, and Triangle Strategy are almost certainly not going to happen anymore.

  25. MrFOrzum

With how extremely costly it is to develop games these days, exclusivity just isn’t ideal. The idea of exclusivity has to go, whether that means timed exclusivity or none at all.

Over the coming years we will see more PS games on other platforms (they have also been pretty vocal about them potentially going multi plat), and Xbox have already started their process. Especially live service games which are highly dependent on player retention.

The future is one where forever exclusivity just doesn’t exist, timed still might be a thing tho.
