What are some modern pre-rendered isometric games that you’ve played recently?
It’s legit my favourite art style for games. I wish it was used more!

  1. The Ascent has a fun but repetitive gameplay loop. Environment and soundtrack are top notch. 8/10

  2. Not that new anymore, but want to add Shadowrun. 3(?) games total. Was great!

What is the name of the game in the screenshot?

Sorted by developer, since the ones from the same developers tend to feel very similar:

    * Owlcat Games: The Pathfinder games (Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous), WH40k: Rogue Trader
    * Harebrained schemes: Shadowrun trilogy, particularly Dragonfall and Hong Kong (Returns was just…okay, and I haven’t played Battletech yet)
    * Obsidian: Pillars of Eternity and its sequel; also, Tyranny
    * ZA/UM: Disco Elysium

Of these, I think the Owlcat games were my favorite, although I think Tyranny is the most underrated and Disco Elysium is a one-of-a-kind experience

I don’t think it’s prerendered, but Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous is isometric and one of the best rpg’s I’ve ever played.

  6. AccurateChance2689

what game is that in the picture?

Aliens Dark Descent was my person game of the year last year. The atmosphere created with an isometric game was incredible. Just so much fun.

Loving No Rest for the Wicked right now!

The original Stasis is pretty good too, amazing story and atmosphere… most of the time. I’m working through Bone Totem myself at the moment and it is somehow better. Moses is worth the worth the price of admission alone.

Aliens: Dark Descent. If you like the Aliens universe, this game is a must.

  13. Genesius_Prime

Man I’d love it if they made another isometric Fallout game while we wait a decade for Fallout 5

  14. homers_voice

Pillars of eternity 1 was my most immersive gaming experience in the last 5 years or whenever I bought it(probably longer) story and voice acting was flawless with great Combat and choices with no clear “right” answer 10/10 would recommend.

  15. love me some isometric tactics with good narrative. just did my second run of Gears Tactics last week. Here’s some of my recommendations:

    – Wasteland 2 & 3

    – Hard West 1 & 2

    – Shadow Tactics (real-time)

    – Banner Saga trilogy

    – Divinity 1 & 2

    – Shadowrun series

    – Expeditions: VIking & Rome

    – Battletech

    – Phantom Doctrine

    – Mutant Year Zero

    – Desperados 3

The Ascent is still the best graphics in isometric that Ive seen. It really flexes it at times, but sadly gameplay isnt as great

  17. BennieOkill360

Stasis bone totem was very nice.

    Played darkwood, also very good.

    Now I am playing signalis

  18. Any fans of the Alien Breed games? They weren’t the best but I really dug the trilogy when it released back on Xbox Live Arcade. Always hoped for a backward compatibility upgrade but afaik it was left behind in the 360 era.

  19. ICPosse8

Would Onimusha be considered isometric? I’ve always wondered.

  20. MagnusStormraven

Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader. It’s easily up there as one of the best 40k games to date, and is a solid CRPG in its own right (I’m having far more fun with it than I ever did with Pathfinder: Kingmaker).

  21. Silver085

Massive Chalice is fun for a few go’s. Lots of variation in each play.

  22. Radiant-Ruin-8928

Loved playing The Ascent. Has some of the best cyberpunk design I’ve seen.

  23. Just throwing this out there — bg1/bg2/iwd enhanced editions run great on modern computers, and while they do show their age in some ways, they can still be damned fun.

More on-topic, I can definitely second recs for owlcat games and pillars of eternity.

Has anyone ever made a full open-world adventure game with isometric gameplay?

Like hades + breath of the wild?

  25. boofaceleemz

Pillars of Eternity I and II are gorgeous games. Wasteland 3, not gorgeous per se but has a unique and cool style. Tyranny was also pretty good and had great art. Torment: Tides of Numenera also deserves a strong recommendation, high marks on atmosphere and art though maybe doesn’t compare to the others in terms of interactive narrative.

They’re not isometric, but I recently played the Owlcat Pathfinder games and then Rogue Trader. They’re pretty close though (top down 3D CRPGs with an emphasis on art) and have some really beautiful scenes.

Can it be isometric if its not using tiles on a grid?
