Linux distros have come a long way though. But still not there for me as I still find myself using Windows for some games.
There’s a subset of people willing to trade their privacy and data for ease of use.
Chicken and egg situation, give linux mainstream software it will get tone of users. mainstream software isn’t available on linux because there are very few users so chicken and egg situation for years.
decided to give linux another shot yesterday, after trouble shooting for 2 hours because my 2tb drive kept getting disconnected for no reason, i went back to windows because it works without problem there
As soon as my DAW plugins and audio interfaces work on Linux, I’ll give it an honest shot.

Maybe if Microsoft makes Windows bad enough, Linux could get some decent market share.
Until Linux has the ease of use like Windows/MacOS it will never have wide spread adoption by the general public. Yes, YOU, might find it easy but your average user needing to do more than click and install/use is far to complicated for the vast overwhelming majority of users.

I use both windows and linux mint. For everyday stuff, I’d say linux mint is perfectly fine as is right now, ubuntu probably even better.
I really wish the gaming part was polished a bit more, I’d completely ditch windows.
I use Linux, it is great for a lot of things. It isn’t really ready for “non enthusiast” use.
I can play all the games I like 🤷♂️
I’ve been using Linux for 4 years (started around the release of Valorant, ironically enough). It’s been going quite smooth – only using Windows for Call of Duty and occasionally Fortnite (which is intentionally blocked because of Sweeney’s Linux hate boner)
It’s no replacement – although I transitioned easily, it certainly did differ in a few ways, which I’ve come to prefer despite using Windows (decent) and MacOS (awful) all my life prior.
But a viable option? It absolutely is nowadays. You’ve probably heard this a thousand times but: Steam Deck. Nothing else to be said. It’s certainly not for everyone, but it’s far from the complex beast it appears to be.
I still recommend Kubuntu for those looking to get into it – it’s not the best, I personally wouldn’t use it, but it’s by far the easiest.
Can’t blame them really. Many of us found renewed love towards our computers thanks to it. I don’t go preaching it around though. You gotta use the OS that makes you happy.
Every time a post about Linux has more than 10 votes, someone feels the need to make a post complaining about it. I don’t know, maybe if enough people install Linux the universe looses it’s balance or something.

The increasing popularity of the Steam Deck is making it less and less difficult to get used to.
It’s not a matter of time, but a matter of users and market share.
Linux already supports basically everything the average user needs and wants as easy and reliable as windows.
There are a few exceptions, for example some commercial software with strong DRM. Most importantly MS Office and the Adobe-crap. Also some games, especially EA and others that overuse denuvo.
For everything else there is either an official Linux version (all browsers, even MS Edge, MS Teams…) directly available through the build in package manager (just like an AppStore), a often more modern alternative or at least a highly efficient compatibility layer like Proton as a last resort (especially gaming).
Especially the ‘more modern alternative’ is always putting people off. I’ve seen people try to install WinRAR or PuTTY on Linux.
Why are people still using WinRAR at all?
And why isn’t Microsoft just putting an universal solution like Ark or FileRollin into their system?
All of those algorithms are free, there are open source implementations, like in 7zip, even available on Windows. Linux has all that stuff built in. People are just too comfortable to stick to the same crap forever that’s been outdated for 5-15 years now.
Want to edit video? DaVinci Resolve basically became an industry standard everywhere, except for old companies stat still cling to Adobe Premiere.
Want to do office work? Who the fuck doesn’t do this in the cloud? And especially: Why? Use fucking Google Drive or even Microsoft 365 if it’s so important for you to use M$ software. Just go with the time and take those sweet versioning, backup and share features.
There is only few professional reasons I can honestly see, and that are Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Acrobat. And I hate Adobe for it.
Also streaming, because no streaming service allows HDR content to be streamed to Linux. This is an artificial limitation because companies are just shitty.
And then there is gaming.
What doesn’t work?
7 of the top 100 games on Steam and 3.5% of the top 1000 games don’t work. And why? Crappy Anti-Cheat that artificially blocks Linux just because.
What to get Sims 4 to work on Linux? Easy. Cracked version runs out of the box in Proton.
Linux has some cases of insane performance benefits on games that aren’t even optimized for it. Everything that uses Vulkan and doesn’t have Denuvo-shit basically runs out of the box perfectly. Slap in even a cheap AMD GPU and you get an awesome gaming box. What do you think, why Valve, the biggest PC gaming company, decided to use a Linux distro on their devices? Just for the sport?
Imagine if there would be enough users so that some companies would actually start giving a shit and start optimizing their games. But without that DirectX and Windows overhead and especially without that Denuvo trojan.

Windows 10 is ugly, unintuitive and uncustomizable. Let’s not talk about that Add-infestes surveillance software Win 11.
Linux is on par with windows for nearly everything for at least 5 years now. It’s competitive for gaming for at least 2 years now.
People put insane amounts of free work into it to get everything to the really good point we have now. For freedom and democracy.
What is still needed? Users. We just need more Linux users. And that’s actually a thing we can’t fix ourselves.
Because only if we get users companies will have an incentive to remove their artificial locks that prevent their software to run on Linux.
Say what you will but with the steam deck being built on Linux it’s pretty much here. It works pretty fantastic as well. That’s the way I recommend everybody coming from the console to get into PC gaming. They’re familiar with the controls and have similar user experience with the option of exploring the desktop mode.
Switched to Linux a month ago and only regret is why I didnt do it earlier. Only reason what kept me from changing was gaming performance, but all of my games work great.
MacOS runs on top of UNIX (same base as Linux), steamdeck is also Linux, android is Linux as well. Saying than Linux is not easy to use is ignorance.
