All they have to do is make it optional and put a DLC item as a reward. They’ll get their sign-ups from a majority of the players, and those who don’t want to or can’t, will still be able to play the game.

Eh, I think a lot of people (myself included) will play that game just for the single player aspects and never need to deal with it. That wasn’t an option for Helldivers.
Its also very different to launch the game with the requirement ahead of time than to let the game be out for months before doing a rug-pull and forcing it on everyone who already bought the game.
I don’t see there being anywhere near backlash for GoT.

Weren’t people here telling that they have no problem with 3rd party accounts if they’re in the game from the start and that the issue with Helldivers 2 was because it wasn’t at the start? So what’s the problem with GOT? People here were defending other games having 3rd party accounts when compared to Helldivers 2 “because they were in the game when it launched”. If you now have a problem with GOT, then better start with all other major publishers too.
