Well, Todd Howard seems to have cracked the code – Starfield went all rogue on us with its new vibe, and some folks just weren’t ready for the wild ride!
Samsterwheel920
I guess you guys weren’t ready for that yet, but your kids are gonna love it.

I think the issue is that on the contrary it was not different enough, worse than that, exploration and immersion in Skyrim is better than in Starfield
Frankly, they really need a new engine or profound rework at least: The animation, storytelling, character design and game structure really seem limited by the creation engine now
Scruffylookin13
Also, the game was shit
Rdt_will_eat_itself
Skyrim had that “what in oblivion” moment.
Fallout 4 had the nukes coming down moment.
Starfield after 10 hours had nothing to hook me to it.
I gave up on that game when i was asked to flip a bunch of power switches on some forgettable under-city that felt empty.
No other game had so large areas that felt pointless.
Morrowind, oblivion, fallout games all had story hidden around every nook and cranny. Even if it was just a corps with a flower and a bottle. Every character had something.

Or it was the same in the worst ways possible.
TW_Yellow78
Nah, it was just shallow and superficial.

I’m really trying to see his PoV on this. Part of me wants to think it’s PR but this just seems like bad PR. I legit think it’s a combination of copium and being super out of touch.
Like it just wasn’t that good of a game and it’s not hard to see that.
OrcWurst
People wouldn’t mind it being different if it were different in a good way.
Different, as in “Fallout: In Space” different? Because I guess that’s technically different.
Maybe try a new game engine. Y’know, one that doesn’t have its roots in a 27 year-old engine.
TheIncredibleHork
It honestly felt like jumping into Fallout 4 in space but with a level 1 character, the progression/modification mechanics at the endgame, and the story having completely skipped whatever it was that got/was supposed to get me invested in the game in the first place.
It wasn’t that different, but where it was different was in that missing “hook.”
whoneedsmagicman
I reckon Todd is blowing more smoke.
ProfessorMonopoly
It sucked wang. Just call it like it is man.
Glad_Advertising_125
And that difference… Boredom. The game was boring. The game is boring.
It’s fine to swing and miss. Just put it out its misery and let’s crank out some fallout
Naltrox
I turned around on the starting planet and walked for a real life hour. There was 1 empty cave on the entire planet.
The fun of the older games was going off the beaten path and finding cool stuff. This was not my game.
Swordbreaker9250
He’s right. The main issue with the game is that it lacks Bethesda’s signature: their open world design. All of that was stripped away when they decided to do 1000 planets that are all just bland and uninteresting.
TheJediCounsel
Todd is impressive. There’s an infinite amount of 2 plus hour video essays about why Starfield is just a shittier version of the games they’ve been making.
And Todd can take that is that they’re being too innovative. He is so stubborn
Faelysis
Since the release, Todd has been trying to excuse himself of doing a bad game. It seem he doesn’t want to acknowledge that his company is not one of the worse big AAA studio and is now far from offering the same quality in their game than when Bethesda was doing game out of passion and not as a business
Icefiight
Oh sweet todd.
Your shitfield is the most soulless medicore product ive ever played thats supposedly a AAA title…
Scaarz
Todd was huffing his own farts. He should get outside more, but he would get lost using his shit map app.

The game is uninspired in general. It looks cool on the surface, but everything is ankles-deep.
The choices you make in character creation look like they’re different and interesting, but once you get down to it, they’re pretty basic. The world is huge, but doesn’t have interesting exploration. Settled areas are more interesting, but you really feel they had to cut down on them because they had so much to design.
But worst of all, most of it is bland. There isn’t a lot of elements that you’ll look at and say “that’s so Starfield”. Star Wars’ vehicles, places and characters are instantly recognizable. Mass Effect has very distinctive races. Star Trek has its ships and uniforms as well as some very well known and distinctive races. Halo has Masterchief. No Man’s Sky has a distinctive look and graphic design. The Outer Worlds and Borderlands have satire and unique cartoonish designs. You look at a Destiny character and you know what you’re looking at.
Starfield has nothing of the sort.
Even regarding gameplay. Star Wars games have Jedi powers and lightsabers. Mass Effect has great companions and story with choices that often matter. Halo has kick ass gunplay. The Outer Worlds has better characters. Destiny has good gunplay and more loot than you can care about. No Man’s Sky has survival (resource gathering) elements.
Starfield shines in no gameplay aspect, apart from maybe the ship building, but ship-to-ship combat isn’t particularly exciting after the first few fights.

It was a ball-less, gutless, piece of generic crap.
Randommaggy
They were trying to do something unfamiliar to them, with an engine barely capable of doing what they’re familiar with.

I’m not a Starfield hater, but I gave it an honest try and didn’t feel the desire to come back and keep playing it. There are games I honestly look forward to picking up and playing. I just replayed Fallout 3 and had a blast. I was hurrying home to play it.
Starfield never did that for me.
amurica1138
Again I’ll ask – we are being made to wait an extra TEN F*(&*ING years for the next TES game so they could ~~excrete~~ produce this first?
ThatDucksWearingAHat
It was extremely boring extremely lame extremely soulless and devoid of anything truly interesting and the response from devs were ‘hur dur when the astronauts went to moon’ THEY HAD A MISSION THEY HAD A PLAN THEY HAD OBJECTIVES something this game severely fucking lacks in every form.
