Hey everyone, I saw this recently and thought it was pretty interesting. I thought I’d start up a conversation here about it for those interested in talking about it. Honestly parts of the article kind of feel like an advertisement but a part of me thinks that this kind of tech can be used for a whole lot more than just advertising products.

People are already seeing bots show up reposting content and often word for word recreating entire posts.

It sort of makes you wonder what is actually possible in this sphere. The implications and what it can mean for free speech on the internet. We’re seeing a rise in fascism and propaganda online. Recently I was recommended a video that made me raise my eyebrows. There’s a youtuber with hundreds of videos that promotes certain rhetorics that are morally questionable. Almost every single one of his videos has around a million views. That in recent months has solely focused on some pretty questionable stuff.

In a lot of ways it matches conservative view points in many ways. Seemingly to target individuals in likely rural areas to talk about the negatives of the cities. This is just an example that I’ve seen recently online of a worsening trend of these more “subtle” propaganda pieces.

I’m not really sure what to think of it. But seeing the stuff that’s already hitting the market it wouldn’t be too surprising. A part of me wonders what it means for these kinds of platforms. Right now we’re just looking at basic things like copy and pasting already made posts. But what if this was all automated?

AI Generated Videos of people talking about issues and conditions. Promoting specific narratives online about various things. I’m not even talking about someone overtly saying something but something more subtle. The blatant rejection of things and ideas. Many of these systems have already existed but how much worse they could potentially get. Reddit itself has a limited range of influence. But what about other social platforms. Tik Tok, Instagram, Facebook. Imagine if someone who you believe to be part of the same group as you, maybe they’re black, white, young, old. Were to appear in a video to tell you about something. It could be anything, they present misinformation to you as fact. Maybe even creating or misusing information to do.

To spread rhetorics about issues maybe anti-immigration or to deny societal issues as something that everyone faces. They could create an entire ecosystem of people who agree on specific viewpoints or to intentionally discourage others from participating. Honestly, it just looks as though we’re at the start of something much more dangerous.

Anyways, let me know what you think.

An unregulated AI is the death of free speech. It’s intended use is to bombard spaces, influencing/ altering opinions of the weak willed.
