Spent quite a while dialing this in. I am brand new to any in-depth memory OC – timings specifically. In the past, I have always enabled XMP and called it a day. With that being said, I am open to any sort of feedback/thoughts, good or bad.
The MC voltage was very specific; it took me a bit to discover that 1.5 was sort of a sweet spot for my chip. The reason being is that anything slightly over or under 1.4 would give me errors pretty much immediately in any test. I later realized that it was the same at the end of the spectrum; anything slightly below 1.5 was bad, anything slightly at or over 1.5 was good. 1.525 ended up being where I landed. The IVR voltage was very specific at 1.4 being stable for me; anything under or over led to instability.
This is an 8000MHz kit stock, but I was never able to get it stable. I was close with 7800, but I would reboot and get errors even after passing various tests for a substantial amount of time. This went on for a bit until I gave up and landed at 7600.
The first screenshot is y-cruncher (VT3) running for over 30 minutes and my timings, temps, VIDs. The temps are not pretty, but I only see that when running AVX – this is not something I experience in-game. My chip is not the best; I am surprised at 115 SP for the P core that my VID at 6.2 is 1.514V. I thought it would be lower considering 120 is the highest to the best of my knowledge. Maybe something I am missing there and/or the VID does not play much in the scoring.
With that being said, 6.1 all-core ended up producing better results in Timespy Extreme than 6.2 or 6.3 boost on two cores did. 6.4 didn't seem worth the trouble with my current cooling solution (Deep Cool 360mm AIO). The second screenshot is Timespy Extreme score, MSI overclock on the 4090, and CrystalDiskMark results of my Steam drive (3x Samsung 980 Pro 2TB in RAID 0 – not fake RAID).
My next step is a custom loop. I need to determine if delidding is worth it or not, and also study the process. Other than that, the secondary/tertiary timings seem to be right about as tight as I can get them. At this point, it seems like anything I touch goes south quickly. The tRRD_sg is maybe the only one I can wiggle some. tFAW at 16 does not run on this kit for some reason. There is probably a reason that I am too inexperienced to see yet.
