On Windows it makes no sense. Mac makes it work by making ‘Command’ do the same thing as ‘Control’ on Windows, so the only real difference is you move your thumb from the space bar to press it instead of moving your pinky down from the home row. There’s pros and cons to both ways.
But if Ctrl is what you use for shortcuts, it should definitely either be all the way to the left or right next to the space bar, no in between.
For the thinkpads there is a setting in the bios that allows you to switch positions between ctrl and fn.

If I ever became world dictator, my first official act would be to ban FN buttons entirely. If manufacturers want to offer more functionality, they can make an extra fucking button row above the F1-12 row.
I’ve actually never seen such an abomination. I’m angry just looking at it.
