I currently have 3 monitors and needing a 4th (programmer plus a ton of side work so definitely helps)

I use 2 monitors (27” horizontal and 24” vertical) for one job and a single 27” for my side projects. i’m considering either buying two ultrawides or just adding another 24” vertical for the side projects set up

i’m curious how many people switched to ultrawide (more for work then gaming) and if they realized it wasn’t for the best. neck pain, efficiency, etc. if you did switch and love it, i’d want to hear that too!

I’ve had a 34” ultrawide since June 2021. The only problem I’ve found is finding wallpaper backgrounds is a little rough. Besides that it’s been a dream.

It’s great for mulit-tasking, but I would keep a smaller secondary monitor as your “3rd” screen.

  2. I bought a 34in ultrawide basically as soon as they came on the market, an LG 34um95. It’s more helpful to think of it as two 4:3 monitors shoved together. For productivity work where I have multiple windows, or for things like video editing or audio work it’s been amazing. Not so much for things like spreadsheets or whatever. I could definitely see a case for development where you have one window with your code and the other with documentation or whatever.

I wouldn’t, however, try two ultrawides side by side. Stacked, maybe, but side by side would be way too wide. I’d also make sure you find some that are more than 1080p high. The LG I have is 3440×1440 and it’s a good sweet spot.

You also mentioned more work than gaming, but I will also give the caveat that for gaming, you’re effectively driving a 2.5k screen if you get something like my LG, so you need to keep that in mind in terms of graphic performance. For non-gaming, it’s a non-issue, though.

I have been on the ultrawide train for like 8 years now. Took a detour and got two regular wides but ended up going back to ultrawide. I love it for gaming and work is great. I may get a smaller regular wide just to keep to the side only because I often find myself using two PCs/laptops at the same time and having to switch inputs gets old.

Literally my only gripe is that it makes screen sharing while using Zoom more of a hassle, because most of my coworkers are just on their laptops. 😂

Sharing my screen is a sure way to collect complaints. I usually quickly change the resolution to 1080p temporarily.

I have had my 49” ultra wide for awhile, I love it personally, I can split the screen if I need to into 2,3 or 4.

I can’t go back from using an ultrawide as my main monitor

  8. Despite OP asking for work stuff and not gaming stuff, I gotta say the only thing I regret about going ultrawide is that competitive shooters force you to a 16:9 aspect ratio and give black bars on the sides. To the point I just quit them all.

The upside is that, I have become a much more chill dude since then.

  9. I bought an Asus 35in ultra wide 4-5 years ago and I like it though I do have some small qualms with it.

I had upgraded from the 2x27in – and I’m a cloud engineer/DevOps engineer. The biggest change for me was the lack of reliably splitting my work on the screen. There are apps that can split the monitor virtually and you can map applications that way, I just found 2x27in a bit better. More specifically having a dedicated window for slack/teams/work.

Outside of this small annoying thing (for me), the benefits of one widescreen monitor are that I don’t have neck strain anymore, the eye strain has decreased, and playing video games with it is nice.

I have a USB portable monitor if I need extra space but I barely use it.

I got my first UltraWide this evening and I cannot fault it, granted it’s only been 7 hours but I’ve only gamed on it, but the difference is insane, I feel like it’s so much easier.

Tomorrow is the first time it’ll be getting used for work so I can provide you with an update. It’s more of an admin day tomorrow so forms and emailing but if that’s what you’ll be using it for, happy to cast an opinion.

Had a 34in. Didn’t seem worth it. Got a 49in and lack of vertical fov killed the experience. Went back to 120hz 55in TV. I’ll probably never move away from this

  12. droopstroops

I use my 49″ as two 27’s most of the time and I love it. No bezel like if it was two separate monitors…

    No regrets

The only thing I regret is getting a second and stacking them. I think I’d prefer having 2 16:9’s stacked vertically on either side.

But my main monitor I love it

  14. NeedlesslyAngryGuy

Yes! Sent it back because distorted squares (windows) is just weird to me. Same with videos, seeing horizontal bars with curves is just bizarre.

I got the 49 inch Samsung and hated it. I just didn’t find it as useful has having 3 separate monitors. Retuned it after a day of use.

I returned mine because my desk wasn’t deep enough for it at the time (24”). Felt like I had to swivel too much to see, so that should play into the decision. 30” deep would probably work great (using mine with a 43” TV and LG dualUp)

  17. I had 45” one for a week, returned it and got a cheaper LG C2 42”, absolutely love it.

  18. for the past 1.5 yr been using lg ultragear 34″curved 160hz 1440p…its the sweet spot for me as for size and resolution..I would definitely suggest it to anyone in the market for a new monitor…I know it was under $400 which is really a great value

  19. Kglugenbeel

Bought a 49” and was the single best purchase I’ve ever made

  20. mgstoybox

I love mine, but I wish the resolution were a little higher. 3440×1440 isn’t quite tall enough at 1:1 scaling. 34” ultra wide is the biggest I can fit with my office setup, and that size doesn’t seem to come with higher res panels.

Me! I had a 34″ MSI 1440p 1440hz monitor that I just never could get setup to how I was comfortable with it.

I sold it and swapped it for a 43″ 4k 1440hz and have been absolutely blown away. Such a better gaming and multimedia experience.

Work and multi tasking is amazing, Gaming while watching a stream I kind of miss my second screen

  23. patrickgamer

Zero people I know who have ultrawide monitors regret them.

  24. Mobster-_Lobster

No not really, absolutely love my 30 inch curved ultrawide.

  25. I love my 38″ Alienware ultrawide LED. It replaced 3 27″ IPS monitors. I do occasionally miss having the 3rd screen for gaming (one to look things up without tabbing out), but I can always add one of them later if I can’t live without it. Here’s a desktop screenshot to give you a feel of the resolution. https://i.imgur.com/eDqIqa1.jpg

I switched to ultrawide and.. I AIN’T EVA GONNA STOP! I love it. There are a few titles that don’t support ultrawide but as long as you’re not afraid to read and tinker you’ll have no problems getting them up and running

  27. FrancescoMaggio

I had ultra wide. I don’t think they offer much except a feeling that you have a big screen.
Moving back to a higher resolution 27 inch gave me a lot more screen space. I can see the utility only for horizontal software like music production
