from what device, from how far, do you actually have your antenna plugged into your desktop if it’s a desktop

Dude at that point i’d just use my mobile data.
In my experience, the issue comes from wifi channel. It is highly likely that there is a other wifi ssid on the same channel and causes interference. Try Wifi analyzer on an Android device (iOS not capable). Check to see if there is another wifi on the same channel as your parent’s channel.
ask them to help you lay a cable… that’s the only way to get a proper connection.
this will probably give you the ability to see that you have online classes which you could join with a good connection lol
Yeeeesh. I’d definitely try a hardwire if possible before changing, just to make sure the problem isn’t your laptop’s wifi adapter or something.
Or speed test with another laptop on wifi there just to confirm.

Need more details to be able to say if it’s a settings issue or a device issue. How old is the router (aka “WiFi device”)? What speed internet do they pay for to feed the house? (Eg. 250 vs gigabit internet makes a difference, especially with lots of devices.) Any walls between laptop and router? What is the material of the walls if so? How many other “smart” devices on the same network? You’re right that it’s not typical and hasn’t been for years, but WIFI is tricky and can be several potential issues. I agree with the suggestion of trying an Ethernet cable to get a baseline.

ooof, well from your other comments sounds like you tried direct ethernet and got the same. You keep saying ‘wifi’ provider which I’m not really sure what that means, I assume you mean ISP, but wifi is just between you and their local router, what kind of internet service do they have? satellite? dial up? DSL? cable? 4g/5g?
Figuring out what they’re paying for might save you a lot of time troubleshooting this, if you’re on some old outdated ADSL technology there might not be much you can do.
Make a hotspot on your phone and use mobile data instead.

Starlink can be slow
i had this problem when the internet provider enter our village and we need to share the bandwith and i only get 100kb to 500kb. and the internet can be interupted by rain. fortunately rn it give us the promised speed

Hey, local internet repair guy here. What kind of modem and router do you have? Is it an all in one or a 2-piece setup? How long have you had it? Who is your internet provider? What speeds are you supposed to be getting? Is the equipment yours or your service providers? If you’re paying for something higher and only getting that, it may be worth scheduling a trouble call with your internet company.

Is the wifi router separate from the broadband router? If so, as well as plugging an ethernet cable into the wifi router to check that (many reasons there could be a problem with wireless speeds) you could also try plugging an ethernet cable directly into the broadband router (make sure you have windows firewall enabled) to make sure your wifi router isn’t completely kaput. And check different ethernet cables in case that’s bad as well.
Still bad then check what the internet speed *should be* and call tech support.
Ring up the provider
I mean…there’s nothing that really can be done about your parents being technologically inept. Maybe look into things yourself and show them that the speeds are not sufficient for your classes? Parents are a lot more likely to cave on things when classes are involved. At least in my experience.
There’s no conceivable universe this is enough to be doing online classes, let alone online gaming. Assuming its Zoom/microsoft teams meetings for classes I mean. If its just assignments and no actual class meetings then *maybe* itd work, but you’re basically looking at losing a lot of time you shouldn’t have to be losing.
The government provided internet option for where I live is faster than this. I think it was 50mbps down and like 20 up but its been a while since I looked into that. If its a cost thing then there’s probably something affordable in your area if you look. Spectrum is the one of the worst internet provider in my state for consumers connectivity wise (seriously the amount of times the internet has gone out for no discernible reason whatsoever is insane) but its still got a $30/month plan thats up to 500mbps down, I’m on a slightly more expensive plan at $50/month but that was because I used to be on a different plan getting less for $75.
It could be something you’ll be dealing with regardless of ISP. If you’re able, check the speed y’all are paying for. It’s possible that something is getting throttled in the process of getting the internet to your home. My dad was paying for about a gig down a few years back and was getting maybe 250 mbps down across every device and managed to negotiate with the company for damn near free internet over that for the rest of the time he was using that provider. A friend of mine had even worse internet than you’re getting and it turned out to literally be a matter of bad cables in the ground; once those got ripped up and replaced he had MUCH better internet it was practically night and day difference. Went from taking literal days downloading a 500mb game to a handful of hours.
Take the initiative and show them *why* it needs to be better and *how much* better it can be. I would suspect you’re telling them you need better internet and it’s falling on deaf ears because they don’t quite understand the intricacies behind it all, maybe contextualizing it can at least help them understand the problem.

I had a similar problem.. just have them call the ISP.. when my parent were having this issue, it was their line coming in.. a connection failed, and it was a $3 part, and it was fixed. Start with the source

Do you live in the US? If so see what ISP they have and what package they’ve got and see if it’s being advertised as broadband. If it is, you might be able to tell your parents that there’s potential they could get free money for false advertisement.
