From what I recall, Sony foolishly based the design on what research showed would be the most comfortable and ergonomic shape to hold for extended periods of time. They failed to take account of the “I want to look as cool and uncomfortable as possible” factor when it comes to gamers’ choices of peripherals.

Of course nobody actually used it so it could’ve been very comfortable. Near the end of PS3 lifecycle, there were a lot of complaints about PS3 controller comfort. Which is why design was changed for PS4 instead of hanging onto the same dual analog design Sony used for PS1/PS2/PS3
