Which pill suits you best?

Path tracing. Most 2D is a rainbow puke cartoony boring trash, and only very few are good. I have yet to see an ugly game with involved RT and path tracing.

  2. RentonZero

Both have there places when done well. Many older raster games looked flat and many RT games don’t offer any noticeable graphical difference but still cost 20fps

  3. SameRandomUsername

    I don’t compromise. So I take both.

  4. Neither, my good ole RX570 renders stuff the old-school way, no need for this fancy oompa loompa bullshit *starts crying behind the happy mask*

  5. giantfood

Neither. Give me the green pill. The one that gives GPUs that doesn’t need dlss to run at max detail at a decent price.

  6. QueZorreas

Idk what “themed” means in this case. Or why are we choosing when RT is still just a paint coat applied over rasterization.

I just like the graphics from the Metal Slug/Contra/King of Monsters era.

We’re like a good six years into ray tracing as a Real Thing™, and honestly? I still think it’s a gimmick.

Sure it could be good, it’s got potential, but it’s not going to be practical as a standard feature for several generations, when the hardware can truly handle it. And by then we will have forgotten about it, like tessellation and PhysX.

i actually really like ray tracing in most games. Some games look amazing without it (TLOUS for example), but cyberpunk with path tracing is just unbeatable. Some games with bad raytracing i leave it off on (forza for example) but most games i just turn it all on max unless im getting below 90 fps.

  9. certainlystormy

both are good. metro exodus is awesome with rt, and scrap mechanic doesn’t need rt. both look good. lol

I think RT should only be used for effects that can’t be done via raster or whose implementation would ironically be more costly.

Currently there’s not many cases to sacrifice so much performance for so little (both AMD and Nvidia).

Fog effects are a place where RT really shines, but others. Not so much.

People talk about reflections but RT doesn’t always make sense for those when the hit is so high. For most you can either use the engine built in planar reflections for limited use or do it manually like they used to and enjoy a huge performance uplift while having baller reflections (the original Battle front 2, Splintercell on the Gamecube and PS2, Perfect Dark, the Dodge ball map in CSGO, etc).

For global illumination most open world games already had that before RTX like far cry 3 (though, those games still relied on lite RT techniques).

Nvidia them selves even released a paper on GI done via raster.

Real time shadows not only can be done via raster but already have been, again Splintercell one even did this. You can even do a Gaussian blur to soften the shadow if you choose to use a 3d model for the shadow like FEAR and Arma 3 do.

AO is gonna be hard on cycles any method, just use a mixed of baked lighting and real time RT for a balance.

RT is neat and all but all the people who circle jerk on it are essentially telling the same publishers who already don’t finish games and release them running like ass to do even less optimization and brute force these effects via RT.

Not only that but it also plays into Nvidias hand where people are obsessed with RT number instead of actual gaming performance regardless of what the game looks like.

I have a 240hz monitor and I want to use all the Hz, I’m not going to lose FPS simply because people chose not to properly make a puddle.

In cp, path tracing all the way, in ssx tricky raster all the way

  12. Magnumload

Depends. You have the hardware to run at a decent framerate then RT/PT all day. You can’t get decent framerate? Raster. Both will look good, one just might look better.

  13. Infern0_YT

Themed style with well integrated Ray tracing that blends in >>>>

  14. Ray tracing is for ppl who paid for a 4090 and i9 14900k with custom watercooling loops, themed rasterization is more artistic and gives the game a better feeling of finality, like someone went through with a brush and hand painted the lighting in each scene, and is also for those of us with mid-low end machines and consoles

    None

  16. DemonQueenIshino

Just here to point out that you can have themed path tracing as well, path tracing doesn’t automatically mean that the game or application has to be realistically rendered.

  17. CthulhuWorshipper59

I’m the camp not caring about graphics, give me good artstyle and stable 60FPS before anything

  18. I i used to shit on ray tracing before( i had i shit computer that basically cant run it at a playable frame rat e )but man those lights reflections do really look nice

  19. ChickenNSphereAbuse

I check them out every so often, but usually, I just run medium settings and enjoy sitting in the upper 100 range of FPS, breaking into 200s depending on the game

  20. Individual-Match-798

Once you get to play a game with path tracing and Ray reconstruction, like CP2077, you can’t go back anymore.

But in other games, console ports, raytracing is mostly a gimmick. And no wonder as consoles are on AMD SOC.

  21. Loose-Alternative844

I’m playing Alan Wake 2 and full raytracing vs nothing, it’s the same quality graphic in general, the raytracing is a great scam lol just worthy of specific games.
Btw, buy Alan Wake 2 is a complete masterpiece of gaming, cinema, narrative, art. 10/10.

  22. zfreakazoidz

I’ll take the green pill that doens’t use any so I can get a better frame rate. lol

  23. Trungyaphets

Ray Tracing, but without the current performance hit.

  24. Professional_Gaping

I like ray tracing, it looks great when done well, but I think they are using it as a tool to design games now, making rasterization look very similar, and good enough really, the original DOOM has a mod for RT, and that is just the only way you can play the game these days, there is a mod for the original Tomb Raider too, it brings an element of awe into older games, but I have seen a RT mod for Flat out, that just didn’t seem worth it, I guess it is too sunny to notice a difference ? Also, a great addition to the winter to heat up my room.

  25. nanotechky

In gaming. I’ll take both when it’s properly done.

But for 3D Render, Realtime RT/PT is the best way to achive photorealism and accuracy

  26. Chance-Path8578

    GTX 1060 6Gb
    That’s a red for me 🙁

  27. WarrioR_0001

red, lethal company and buckshot roulette works for some reason. if they were like ray traced, you would think it like quake 2 rtx

  28. SenorDangerwank

Um. I like the color blue, so that one.
