I eventually stopped coordinating gaming sessions with my mates cause they’d wait until the time to turn on their machines then it would be a massive update so we would never get to play really.
Come on guys, I’m respecting your time by getting this ready ahead of time, please do the same.

Plan a game night with the guys, tell them to update the game in the morning as you really each have an hour or two to play. You update and get on a minute or two before start time. Some jump on and are ready, then there are those that jump on late and “forgot” to update the game. They get to play one game and complain when everyone has to get off.

yeah omg I remember we theorized and shit… you had to have a network background to play around some of these strict nat types… then the game had an update, steam updates, then game in game updates… JUSt let me play.
