Does this mean we can play games in the ‘Family Library’ of our family members without them needing to be offline? Just can’t play the same title at the same time? If so, this is a huge win for Steam users with close friends and family with good game libraries..

Wait so can I family share games with my brother who lives in another state? Or does this need to be under the same network?

What’s the difference between this and what was already there? My sister was already able to play games from my library. 🤔

FYI if someone hacks in a game you share to them, your steam account will get the bans

Of course! Let’s say that you are in a family with 4 members and that you own a copy of Portal 2 and a copy of Half-Life. At any time, any one member can play Portal 2 and another can play Half-Life. If two of you would like to play Portal 2 at the same time, someone else in the family will need to purchase a copy of the game. After that purchase, there are two owned copies of Portal 2 across the family and any two members can play at the same time.

So its not a fully shared system. Family members still need to buy another “copy” if they wanted to play the same game.

so….. the gist of the competition

    * Steam: Family sharing, up to 6 accounts, cannot use 1 license to play the same game at the same time, can play different games at the same time.

    * windows store: As long as the windows store account have the license, anyone with a different account on the xbox app can play any games (including GAMEPASS) at the same time including the same game. Dunno the limit, i shared between 3-4 PC, and 2 xboxes and none of them complains.

    * epic: as long as the game is already installed, other account can play (but some games may refuse to launch). not sure whether 1 license allows 2 or more accounts to play together at the same time like windows store.

    * gog: you have the game. do anything you want.

I just wish there was a way to buy the game once and do co-op with family. Since couch co-op is mostly dead and some games have some sort of cooperative campaign that would allow us to play together. Buying the game twice isn’t very appealing if they just wanna do co-op with me and won’t play on their own.
