I figured since there was a post about portable PC’s in cases I’d might as well post my portable rig. I’ve been wanting to do this for years but the past year is the first time I’ve been able to find a PC that’s suitably fast and monitors that are thin enough to make it work!
I’m nearly finished with this as a first draft, I plan on getting a second Nanuk case and using my experience to put it together a little better, and squeezing a second battery pack in there so I can get over 4 hours of gaming time on battery. Currently it will get about two.
The mini PC is a Minisforum EM780,Ryzen 7 7840U, 780m Graphics and 32 GB RAM. The battery is a 20k MAH Cuktech 20k. It’s under 100wh so no issues with TSA. The Cuktech 20k is the ONLY power bank I’ve been able to find that allows passthrough without renegotiation. Even the Anker 27k I bought for this project cuts power for a split second when plugging in the power bank to charge, which really sucks. I don’t want to have to shut it down to charge :C The monitors are the thinnest AliExpress ones I could find around $100.
I didn’t want to modify the EM780, so instead of wiring in a new power switch, I decided to go the old fashioned janky way and just adding a button that pushes through the case to push the power button. I messed around with those cube shaped remote “button presser” gadgets but I could never get the button relocated and working reliably when soldering in a new power button but the low tech way seems to work just fine!
Overall 10/10 project, I’m planning to take it to a coffee shop and getting some silly pictures of myself with it sometime soon. Here are a few pictures of it folding up and what the insides look like. Enjoy my horrid cable management!
