I’m very satisfied and happy with the new Contra Operation Galuga game. It’s some kind of remake/reboot of the original Contra. I’ve mostly played the NES version as a kid and before school, my mom and I would play it in the morning and finish the entire game (15 to 20 minutes I believe).
The changes in Operation Galuga are interesting. The very first thing is that now, you have health bars instead of being killed in just one hit. There’s still an option to enable one hit kills if you want though. I remember the very first stage in the NES version to be set at night. Now it’s in the day. If you’re familiar with the bosses from Contra 1, you’ll be treated with some fun twists in this new version, just like with the very first boss! They also took away the levels from Contra 1 where the perspective was from behind your character and replaced them with something else. You can also buy “Perks” that you can assign to your character before each level to help you, such as not losing weapons when you die, starting with upgraded weapons, starting with extra lives or health, those sort of things. As for players, you can now play with up to 4 at once I think, but I haven’t tried that yet. The levels are definitely longer this time around so it’s not a game you can finish in 20 minutes like in the original version.
There’s actually a story mode this time and the characters do speak! There are even little animations from time to time. New characters get unlocked as you progress through the story and you even get to play with the Probotectors from the European version of the game. There are also extra characters you can get as a “secret” after finishing the game, but I’m not familiar with them as I only played up to Contra 3 in the past.
There are also different modes in the game. Story, Arcade, Speed Run, and extra separate difficulty modes called Extreme and Extreme Ultra if I remember correctly.
The game isn’t too long, but isn’t too short as well, it really depends on what difficulty setting you try to complete the game. Overall, it’s a very fun 2d side scrolling shooter especially if you’re a Contra fan.
– Oh, they also replaced the xenomorphs with original aliens this time around lol!

I was pretty excited when I saw the footage. It looks like it has the original Contra bones.
Then I saw the price. No FN way is this a $40 game.

Bought it the other day, will be playing it all weekend. I’m hearing nothing but great things about it so far.

There’s only 2 kinda people here.
Those who can hear the music, and those who lie.

I played the demo. Really missing the upgrade system that Hardcore Uprising had. This game feels like a bit of a downgrade to me because of that. But that might just be me.

But can I get infinite lives with ABBA?

Super stoked about the health bar addition, no more one smack deaths. Totally appreciate the twists on the OG bosses too, keeps us on our toes!

I saw that the Game Grumps were playing this and didn’t realize it was a new release. It looks like it brings the old Contra charm with some much needed QoL updates.
