In 2018 a group of Valve staff tried to figure out just how efficient they were being—and found they were making more money per head than Apple, Facebook, and nearly every tech giant out there

  1. I would say this is written by AI because the writing quality is so terrible, but AI wouldn’t make this many misspellings 😂

And they treat their employees to WAY better.

So basically they just took revenue and divided by number of staff?

I remember hearing this years ago actually. At the time Valve apparently had the least amount of employees out of all companies doing over 1 billion in revenue.

  4. Personal anecdote; the last time I visited Valve was to provide biometric QA data (eye tracking, heart rate) on their Left 4 Dead title. The person running the study and who gave me a tour of the office had a PhD in Neuroscience. They genuinely hire some of the smartest people in the industry, it’s no surprise their headcount is so minimal.

Really? So, they should have the money to make Half Life 3, Left 4 Dead 3, and Portal 3, right?

  6. Indercarnive

That’s kind of what happens when you have a monopoly.

EDIT: I’m not making a moral judgement here or saying valve needs to be punished. I’m just saying it’s not hard to make money when you’re responsible for the vast majority of all PC gaming sales.

This is maybe the worst “news story” i’ve ever read….

  8. Pedantic_Phoenix

The efforts people go to to ask a raise to their bosses

They should compare themselves to other gambling websites.

  10. People generally have a pretty high opinion of Valve. Steam changed PC gaming, the titles they’ve developed have consistently knocked us out of the park (although the frequency is another matter), and they don’t seem to bloat their software like the rest of the industry.

I feel like they are missing out on streaming. They could push out a vertically integrated streaming service, using screen capture and voice through their steam software. They already have the clout and the cash. Why don’t they try to compete with Twitch?

So make half life 3 you lazy, scared fuckers.

  12. Existing365Chocolate

Because Steam, especially back then, was essentially a monopoly taking 30% of essentially 80-90% of all PC game sales and DLC

  13. Skygge_or_Skov

I mean, they have a small dev team and gigantic income from unregulated gambling, which is one of the most profitable businesses in the world…

I always found it odd that certain billionaires get flame broiled for what they do with their money, like buy yachts, or try to build space ships. But for some reason Gabe never gets attacked. He is incredibly wealthy, spends his money on stupid shit, is obese, wants to do brain computer interface type stuff, wants to do VR stuff, but he gets a pass.

He is basically a worse Zuckerberg/Musk/Bezos on every metric, but everyone simps for him. If you think facebook is bad because you see that your highschool bully is a millionaire because he started a plumbing company, how can you say steam is a social good? It’s probably robbed most of us thousands of hours. Remember, 2 hours a day, is 700 a year. I’ve seen people with 10000 hours in dota. How is that better than “feeling blue” when you see friends and community members do well and post happy pictures like instagram – or pro trump propaganda on facebook.

You can’t even invest in his company and share in the wealth like other companies. He is a dragon sitting on that hoard of gold. And he does nothing with it. Doesn’t help humanity at all. I’ve never heard of him using his funds to start research firms for cures to diseases, like I have heard of bill gates and zuckerberg-chan. He has never pledged his wealth when he dies like Buffet. All that money is HIS. It’s not tangled up in stocks or unable to be liquid. He is sitting on billions of actual CASH. He has far more money to throw around than IPO billionaires like zuck/musk/bezos who can’t just sell all their stock whenever they please, because it could cause panic selling.

This mother fucker could be the Chuck Feeney of the USA if he wanted, but he is probably a monster raping kids on an island and every simps so hard for him.

Fuck Gabe Newell. THIS is the billionaire everyone should hate. Not Zuckerberg or Musk.

Private company that is very pro-consumer and pays its employees well and is an utter success…Weird how hard that is for other companies.

  16. SuperSatanOverdrive

    Is that being efficient though?

They have a milk cow that is called steam, and if that revenue dried up how would they be faring?

  17. Xenemros

Great, now take this effort and aim it at making games instead

  18. Cyberpunk39

Could not care less about this. Has nothing to do with gaming.

  19. Valve makes money due to being a marketplace that keeps them afloat while they do content for their live service games.

They are profiting from other peoples work and publishing it on their store.

I honestly feel like Valve deserves it compared to those other companies. Steam is a fantastic platform, I’ve had it for almost 20 years and have a ton of games on it and it’s so easy to install old games on new PCs, play with friends, stream to TV, use PS/Xbox controllers, etc. and no monthly feel ilke consoles.

Privately held companies can plan past the next earnings report.

  22. AutomatingInfinity

And they aren’t publicly traded. Stockholders and endless need for growth seem to be less valuable than making a good product that sells and continues to sell.

  23. sonofeark

That explains why there are like 2 people working on cs2, nothing gets done, cheaters run rampant, but valve is getting rich with skins. They could make even more money with making a better game but apparently making as much money as possible per employee is what they are going for.

Being the middleman is great, take a cut off of what creators make without creating much yourself (lately) sit back and let the cash roll in.
