Can’t say I’ve done this since my Voodoo days. Spent a grip on SCSI hard drives and a video card. Since then, never. I view parts like I do cars now. Bleeding edge brand new loses way too much value too quickly for me to justify how many hours I had to work to buy them. Wait. Sales. New model came out 6 months/1 year later, that “old stock” is now on sale and is usually damn near just as fast for a lot less.
I also don’t chase games that don’t run on my hardware. Single best change I’ve made with my gaming. If it doesn’t run on my current hardware, it doesn’t get purchased. When I upgrade my box, that game is usually on sale or discounted. Win win and still have extra money in my pocket. Waiting also gets an updated game with less bugs, more added DLC tacked on for cheaper.

Currently running an AIO-edition 4080 with my 5900X to play… Super Mega Baseball 4 and Jagged Alliance 3 (1,300+ hours between the two since July 2023). The next three games in my Top-5 for the last year are FTL, Pentiment, and Colony Ship.
Yep. That was $900 well-spent.

Interestingly enough, for myself – nothing. Then again I mostly ignored the advice given on r/buildapc when I built.
3070ti, i5-10600K, and 32GB of DDR4 is perfect for what I do. Plenty of power for gaming at 1440p, with the CPU’s high (for the time) single-core performance making quick work of CAD and other applications.
It’s the perfect sweet spot – if I end up with a workstation task and it needs more of X resource – I just throw more of X resource at it.
I don’t see myself upgrading for a few years, but I’m happy I have the hardware I do.

I made the mistake of buying a 240hz display. If it wasn’t for that, I’d probably have no complaints of my 10700/3070ti system.

It’s called future proofing. Make a build that lasts you years. Mind you with 4 cores minimum and SSDs a 10yo build is still capable these days.

My favorite is seeing basic builds with a $700+ MB. Like I know the MB is pretty, but the features even have features, and you’ll never take advantage of 80% of the MB lol.

Built my first PC in 2013 and “splurged” on a 4770k after being told that hyperthreading isn’t necessary for gaming and an i5 would be enough. 11 years later and that 4770k is still chugging along on my friend’s PC when the i5 would’ve been unusable years ago.

I’m only guilty with this on the custom watercooling. I actually did buy the RAM for Unreal Engine but I’m not sure if I’ll actually follow through with it. I might just split the RAM and put the other 64GB in another pc

Never maximize? Clearly has not relentlessly benchmarked overpowered parts and then performed the dumbest game engine crushing tests on crysis and eventually inducing a high pitched coil whine and quickly bricking the part. Ask me how I know xD

I went with a full costum watercooling rig just because I can and liked the photos I saw before building it. And I never did it and love to build stuff. Its a great system, RTX4090, 7700X, 32Gb DDR5, etc, etc. The parts were actually the “ok” choice when I build it (launch of 4090 and ryzen 7000), nothing too exotic beside the 4090.
The thing is… I spent a lot on the watercooling stuff and I now use it at 10% brightness because I dont really like it that much. I use a locked colour because I really dont like the “blinking” and “breathing” stuff.
So yeah, I spent a lot on completly useless stuff. Today I would build a complete black system with the similar specs.

My current build started off matched up great with 7700x and a 4080. I threw in a 4090 a couple of weeks ago and didn’t realize it was going to be cpu locked in 4K.

Do your research and stay within a reasonable budget for your income and no choice you make will be wrong.
