Just read an ign article here https://www.ign.com/articles/the-resident-evil-game-that-cant-be-remade that says that RE5 needs to be written if Capcom is going to continue their remakes. I remember playing the crap out of RE5 I thought it was great. This article gives it a lot of crap. What’s everyone else’s thoughts on it?

Chris!!!
Personally I think its still good, but strays from resi a bit too much.
4 was a bit of a diversion with more action set pieces, so 5 seems to doubled down on it, but also it came out after CoD4 revolutionized the shooter market, so it kinda leaned a bit too much into that.
Definitely could see a lot of improvements over the OG5 that would be a rework.
I enjoyed RE 5. I thought it was a good time.
It’s also much more of a shooter with horror vibes as opposed to a survival horror game. As a fan of the original RE games, and considering shooters are common and good survival horror is rare, RE5 IMHO is a fun *game,* but a very meh installment in the RE franchise.
Enjoyed playing RE5 too, good fun overall. Could use a bit of a revamp, but still digs it!
My only problems with 5 were inventory management and AI Sheva. If you were playing with someone else it was a pretty decent game.
I loved that game. The mercenary mode was GOAT.
The article makes it pretty clear. When RE5 came out it was a huge disappointment compared to RE4 because they turned it into Gears of War with zombies, throwing away most of what had made the RE series great. RE6 was more of the same, and the change of direction was such a mis-step that they had to reboot the series with RE7. If they just give RE5 the same remake treatment that the first 4 games have been given, they’re guaranteeing the same disappointment all over again.
Imma take a stab in the dark and say they’re talking about how the game was “racist” because you’re “killing Africans as a white man” despite you know, them being international terrorists and mutated monsters and the game being made by Japanese people.
Not enough voice lines for shouting chris and Sheva.
I played this game and unlocked everything but once in awhile I get the itch to do another run with a buddy.
Tbh, it’s the only resident evil game I made it through! Heck, I might’ve even tried for the infinite ammo on the hand cannons, I don’t remember.
RE5 is basically just RE4 but worse. It lacks any horror at all, the inventory system is total garbage, the AI companion is a chore to deal with, the campaign is shorter, many of the set pieces are ripped off from 4, the story/characters are less fun (minus Wesker), etc. It’s not a bad game, it was just such an obvious step down from it’s predecessor.
It was… okay, but it steered too far from the franchise’s survival horror roots and was more an action game than anything, a trend that was worsened later on by Resident Evil 6.
There were other gameplay decisions that were deemed questionable, such as how it went from the attache case in RE4 to a limited number of items; the AI for the character you weren’t controlling being deemed as ridiculously stupid as it needlessly wasted your items; and it never quite shook the controversy of the initial gameplay reveal trailer of Chris shooting up a load of black people.
Lots of people werent fans of that direction the series was taking back then, myself included and 5 didnt give fans of the original horror focused RE any hope. RE5 was a fun ass game don’t get me wrong but a disappointing end to the original storyline with Wesker and all, just had all the generic mid-late 2000s action movie story beats, villains and characters. 4’s plot was generic too but at least it had an interesting spin on it.
I also hated the forced co-op really could’ve been more fun without it

#2.
I think the general sentiment is that it’s a cool game but not a Resident Evil game.
I’m also wondering if it even needs one? I think we are good for now with the remakes, or maybe do zero.
If they do Remake RE5 they better leave Chris punching the boulder
Its sin was following RE4. I think anything released after RE4 was gonna have unattainable standards.
My only issues were companion AI when playing single-player and the boss fights were a little underwhelming.
The general tone was not horror in the slightest (which didn’t bother me, but I know some people didn’t like it). I liked the lack of a pause screen inventory. Kept the game faster paced and also meant you couldn’t pause and heal and reload in the middle of a hectic situation. I also think the screen filter did the game a disservice. I get that the filter is supposed to be unnatural and oppressive and “atmospheric” but the world is so much more believable without it, which makes it more unnerving. The game also looks more pleasant with a lot more colors splashed into the environments
I wish they didn’t remove the elements they had in the first trailers. There were way more infected and they were highly more aggressive but you also had more options to deal with them.
Regardless I still enjoyed the finished product. I had a blast playing the game and also upgrading everything to max.
The trailer i mentioned.

Resident Evil 5 was many things. Racist it was not
It was bad as a resident evil game, and bad as a single player shooter. It was however good as a co-op shooter.
I very much agree with the first half of the article that talks about level design and the emphasis on the action sequences, taking away from more of the survival horror aspects.
Note that even though I agree, I still enjoy the game and I’ve finished it twice.
I don’t agree nearly as much with the second half of the article that talks about racism. There might be some merit to the presentation of the characters in the game, with it being overwhelmingly poor places, but at the same time, those types of places DO exist. You could go see them in real life if you wanted to. And where the author outright states that what happens in the game (shooting the native inhabitants of the area) is unacceptable, my first thought was “but shooting all of the people in RE4 was okay?”
I loved resident evil 5, have played through it multiple times, not as much as 4, but the co-op with another person does make the game a lot better.
Strayed too far from the genre. All the context you need is Chris Redfield punching a boulder inside a crater and if that doesn’t convince you that this isn’t the real RE experience, I don’t know what will.
That being said, I actually enjoyed RE5 and if I was to rate it, I would actually rate it a 7 just because of how much fun my brother and I had playing co-op.
RE6 is actually the worst in the franchise imho.
The only problem with RE5 was that it did not achieve complete, global, saturation.
All I remember was dying of laughter when I was being chased by what seemed like hundreds of guys on every dirt bike in Africa.
I enjoyed playing it with my friend a longtime ago, only review I can give.
Loved it
The best part of RE5 was rock punching.
Nothing wrong with it. It improves a lot on what Re4 did. And finished the story arc between Chris and Wesker that started from Re1
Re5 coop was insane. Up there with gears1 levels of good, game was built to be played in coop.
Me and my brother in-law would scope up a remake day 1 to do it all over again. God I hope they do.
I liked 5, felt like they built on the action style they started with 4. Similar to what they’ve done with moving the games into first person with 7 and 8.
First Reaper encounter in the game scared the crap out of me.
I’m just hoping we get Outbreak remade one day, it was too ahead of it’s time (online gaming on console wise)
Not a good single player game. Now playing co op is really really good. I just hit the max out all guns achievement and had a lot of fun playing with people.
Its IGN being IGN. Same old song and dance.
I played the hell out of it back in the day and loved it. But…it barely feels like Resident Evil. It’s not the game I would prefer to see remade next, in any case. If they’re going to do another remake I want the OG Resident Evil re-re-made to match the modern style.
Resident Evil 5 is my guilty pleasure. It’s probably my personal favorite RE game. I know it’s not as good as 2 or 4 but there’s something I just loved about it. The silly ness, the so over the top it becomes ridiculous, the melee and I friggin loved the multiplayer challenge mode. I teamed up we a guy who managed to get me in the top 200 leaderboards for that game. We played it nonstop for like 9 months. Speaking of which I hope B1undtz is doing good had a bunch of random letters and number behind it so I was never able to find him again.
Honestly, I feel like they just need to do what they did with 4make to 5make.
Keep the action, scale up the horror, do a great job with the lore/connecting of events, and make the map more streamlined (also, wouldn’t complain if they added an actual occurring merchant/removed that horrible filter)
