CPUs used to look like game cartridges

  1. They did, I had a Pentium2 MMX in a cartridge like this. It made a high-pitch noise and all the TVs in the house lost reception whenever the CPU usage went over 80%. Surprised I’ve not got cancer yet.

well, agp slot gpu’s looked like network/sound cards

Good old Slot 1/A CPUs. My Pentium 3 500 Mhz was a such a beauty.

It was limited, but I have a few still

Celeron 300A overclockers are the NWA of this sub.

Not really. If you opens that “cartridge”, you’ll see a CPU in a PGA socket.

There was that generation (Pentium 2/Athlon era) of CPU that got into that slot form factor as OEM thought, with reason, that it would make it easier to install/change/upgrade CPUs. But, the form factor quickly showed its limitation by the number of pins possible to be put in a tradionnal slot design

I’m guessing those things didn’t draw much power, seeing as they have no cooling.

That was the Slot 1 vs Slot A era. Didn’t last long.

I wish CPUs still came in this form factor. LGA gives me panic attacks because of how fragile the pins on the mobo looked. I’d love that changing CPUs be like changing a game cartridge.

Open the case, and you will get access to the debug port!

  10. Those are generally known as “the dark times”.

There are good reasons they went back.

PENTIUM II 233MHz MMX owner here. Overclocked to 283 Mhz via bus overclock on an Abit LX6 motherboard. I dont even remember how much ram. Heck, I don’t remember if it was EDO or SDRAM, but I think it was 64 MB of RAM running Windows 95. The video card was a NVidia Riva 128.

  12. Every day this sub makes me feel older and older.

I got my old pentium II sitting on my desk next to my current rig. They were cool.

It was dark times back then… Imagine having to use your same powers as on NES carts but on a CPU..

ran celeron 300a on a dual course mobo. 25 years ago
