
Wanted to share my results from overclocking my [HP oem rx 480](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/DYEAAOSwbutlJa-2/s-l1200.webp), however the same overclocking strategies can be applied to rx 470/570/580. I got this card for $40 for an old hp pc I got for free. Running the card at all stock settings it scored [4223](https://www.3dmark.com/spy/46428141) graphics score in 3dmark timespy. when testing I noticed that the hp rx 480 has a [tdp of 110w](https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/211512/211512). A reference rx 480 is 150w so I started by bumping my power limit to +36% which gets me to 150w. I started by lowering peak vcore to 1100mv and bumping up core clocks till it crashed. Then I added 20mv and bumped up core clock an extra 10 mhz or so. Each card responds differently so you might be able to add more clock speed, which also might need more voltage. This netted me a core clock of [1375 mhz](https://imgur.com/A77c3Ou), added more resulted in crashing. Next I started with memory by lowering it to 950mv. Most of these cards can max out memory with automatic timings at 2250 mhz. I was able to run [2250 mhz on the memory with fast timings 2](https://imgur.com/I3AhxeS), which got me my best result with a graphics score of [4694](https://www.3dmark.com/spy/46404032). That put me at rank [329](https://imgur.com/pSor0he) out of [132635](https://imgur.com/cPkzNSP) results on time spy for single card rx 480 and an improvement of 11% over stock. This is pretty close to the 8% increase in core clock from 1266 to 1375 mhz. It did crash some in games so I have dialed it back for daily use, but for benchmarking it held up.
Some extra notes before anyone asks why I didn’t max out the power slider it is because my free pc only has a 300w power supply and I don’t really want to upgrade it. However I recommend maxing it out if you can. Additionally a 6 pin + pci-e power can only supply 150w which is where I set my power limit. Yes I know it’s risky to run it but the pc was free so I don’t care. Also I added some [extra cooling](https://imgur.com/3X6oiBq) to make sure the card performed well. Hope this helps anyone with an old Polaris 10/20 card.
