I’ve been trying to work out why my CPU just keeps throttling its self under load to 0.5ghz then back to W/E it was running at on repeat. Doesn’t seem to be thermal throttling, as can happen while temps are at \~70c.

I’ve tried disabling any OC. Enabling auto MB OC. Enabling PBO. All 3 of these provide the same results, with no OC being able to be under load for 1-2 minutes before it starts.

My cinebench 2024 results for multicore is averaging \~890. Which I understand is very very low for a 5950x.

Is there anything I can do? Or has my CPU been damaged in some way?

What motherboard are you using? The behavior you’re seeing is typically a result of overheating VRMs, which trigger protections that lower clocks to the minimum. Once the temperature stabilizes, the protection is lifted and it ramps back up and repeats the cycle.

Some boards (such as MSI’s notorious X570 Gaming Edge series) were more prone to this, especially with water coolers, which lack supplemental airflow around the socket and VRM area. The quick test is to just point a fan at the board and see if the behavior changes.
