I personally don’t like the idea of a remake like that. They already did a remaster that’s obviously 100% faithful. Making the game again and just every so slightly changing the visuals feels like a waste of development time, resources and a cash grab. The same experience can already be had and is great for many existing fans and it’s not like these visuals would do a good job of drawing in a new crowd.
With a few exceptions, I’d rather see games remade with a lot of improvements and updates. Now, I don’t really think that’s what Remake and Rebirth are.. as obviously they went in a very different direction for story reasons, but an example of some not-1:1 remake that’s remained mostly faithful but did a lot to update the games in ways that made the remakes worthwhile as both a refresh of the original but also a new experience in some ways…
Yakuza Kiwami/Kiwami 2. Almost 1:1 story, but totally new gameplay mechanics and gameplay that really revitalized the games.
Metroid: Zero Mission and Samus Returns. Both really did a service to the originals but also made them fresh experiences.
Lunar: SSSC and Lunar 2: EBC. Same as above, but with some interesting new takes that allow them to stand as great versions of the game but also still let the originals shine, too.
Resident Evil remakes. All of them.
Bionic Commando Rearmed.
I just think there’s a lot of value in remakes that actually do something different with the formula, even if just a little.
