Yeah I know. I feel like he could have just ran alongside. But there’s probably a very good reason for this abomination. Might just be because it’s goofy and funny.

Last FF game for me was FF10 eternity ago.
Nothing for 20+ years and now I can’t put down the god damned controller.
It’s a PHENOMENAL game. So much joy and beauty and FUN.

Red 13 could write a chocobo in the original final fantasy 7. If you did the chocobo races eventually other characters in your party would ask if they could ride the chocobo. Red 13 looks just as goofy on the PS1 as it does now but it is glorious in 4k.
Modern teams would probably have cut the character because he can’t work with the armour modelling, and can’t ride mounts correctly and it’s a whole separate code path for him (and probably a similar issue for Cait Sith).
But FFVII devs in the 1990s didn’t care about that stuff, so just made him, and now 27 years later they have to put the work in somehow because they can’t just cut the character.
And that’s good, because weird and quirky non-humanoid characters can be interesting, even if that’s a cost to build.
Almost as ridiculous as Red climbing ladders.

I was at the FF7:Rebirth panel at NYC Comicon, and the game’s director was asked about this. He said someone brought the idea of Red riding a Chocobo to them and they mocked it up and it was too funny, so they put it in the game. That was it, that it was hilarious.
