I don’t know how it works in other countries, but in the U.S. at least, all the really powerful corporations are merely fronts for the security state.
Whereas in the Cyberpunk timeline the security state and most of the regular government collapsed and never really recovered, which allowed the corps to fill in the resulting power vacuum and to do a lot of things that they wouldn’t otherwise have been able to do.

Influence the directions of wars and conflicts. Routinely get billions in DOD contracts. Mind you the DOD has not been able to pass an audit of its expenses in quite some time.
