I know the ds version looks more like the newer Mario designs but I just love the way Mario 64 looks

The only improvement 64DS made over the original was being easier to play on the toilet.

Beyond graphics, what is the best version of Mario 64 in 2024? I have the N64 rom in 60fps on 3DS. Is there a better version one can play?

Some of the changes like removing the Kool koopa logo makes sense because they were adapting the game to a 3 inch screen instead of a big TV. You would never be able to see the Pyramids, they would just be some yellow noise on a tiny DS screen

Yeah the NDS version added a lot of cool qol improvements but lost a lot of the original charme by doing it. Beside the controls not being analogue there are a lot of reasons why the n64 game is still more played than the remake.
It‘s still cool that this game was playable on a handheld at that time.
If you want to play the original you still can. There are tons of options now to play it on the go.

The cold cold mountain painting was done dirty. Who approved that?

“replaces interesting marbled-blocks with generic brown bricks” what a weird thing to complain about. In what way are the random blocks interesting and in what way are the orange bricks “brown and generic”
