I think we can agree that they’ve turned the game around and it’s great now. However, we shouldn’t stop remembering what it was, and that the CEO of the company outright lied, just to sell copies. We should not celebrate that kind of development. They’ve literally won awards because they lied about the game and released it broken. (Comeback game, etc.)

Greater comeback than Cyberpunk 2077?
Ikantbeliveit
I’m glad they came back, but I refuse to support the idea of putting out broken video games and then just fixing it later if enough people brought it.
Hikari_Sword
What were the contenders?
2Scribble
I mean, it’s not like they’ve got much competition – it’s the exception that proves the rule
A team of devs and publishers who took their lumps – backed up by a community who were willing to give them a chance
Gornub
It’s still probably Final Fantasy XIV.
JohnnyJayce
Decided to give it a third change. Last time I tried the game was over 2 years ago.
For an hour me and my friends tried every trick on the internet to get coop to work and it just wouldn’t let us play together.

Some being like hardly anyone. Most remember being lied to.

Personally, I think their redemption arc has been incredible. It’s been years and they keep updating and adding content, all while not charging a fucking dime more for any of it. At this point, I would totally throw them some scratch.
dimhue
It’s not. It was just an early access game that didn’t put the early access label on it. And frankly, it’s still boring after about a couple of hours unless you’re really into its base-building.
chocolateNacho39
It’s so boring
BarretOblivion
Nah, FFXIV wins that #1/2 MMO actively played kinda beats NMS. Most don’t realize how massive xiv is and generalize NMS as the beacon of redemption.
ghostpicnic
I mean it’s good they improved the game, but I’m getting really tired of this “amazing comeback” narrative. Even now after all the improvements they made, the game STILL isn’t what was promised pre-release and never will be.
It wasn’t a case of miscommunication or a marketing team going a little wild, the lead developer of the game repeatedly made the rounds to conventions and talkshows consciously lying about the game. Much of the footage shown off was scripted for marketing purposes and contained features missing from the final game. Hell, we all thought this game would be a massively multiplayer shared universe and it wasn’t until the game came out that we realized it was entirely offline. These were features touted until release, conscious lies.
So yeah, they made some much needed changes and gave everyone the ability to play with 3 others, but that is still most definitely not the game we were promised. We should celebrate games that deliver on what they promise. We shouldn’t be celebrating getting a game that’s just SIMILAR to what was promised, let alone just because it was totally DISSIMILAR to begin with.

I always find it interesting to see reddit’s response vs general responses on other sites.
Not some No Mans Sky fanboy, not played it in years and can understand the controversy around it. But it’s interesting to me to see people on other sites loving how No Mans Sky has changed over the years, commenting about how excited they are for updates. Then on Reddit it’s comments just like “It’s so boring”

I am uncertain if this is a good thing or not.
Up to the PS2/GC/DC/Xbox era? There was no fixing it post… not along these parallels at least. Even for PC games, patches would bug fix… but they wouldnt change everything at a fundamental level.
That did mean bad games stayed bad… which isnt great. However, it also meant QA and testing needed to be taken seriously. For a profit fixated, apathetic industry, I worry that paying players will be used as unpaid QA more and more

I still find NMS incredibly boring, even after all of its updates.

FF14: Am I a joke to you?
mobbatron
Cyberpunk is what I would choose but that’s because I played it at launch on PS4, then recently the 2.1 version with Phantom Liberty and its like a whole new game now. Just firsthand experience of the turnaround was incredible. Haven’t really played No Man’s Sky
Dadbode1981
I’d agree with that, CP2077 is another big rebound.
DivineToty
I really don’t know how any comeback can top FFXIV but the other contenders are definitely commendable
Dragoninstall
I love me some NMS now. It had such a major glow up, and I’ll happily eat crow because I said I’d “Never open that trash again” after buying it at launch.
The real answer is FFXIV though. How it was day 1 vs. How it is today is like night and day.

Hot take – Still incredibly boring and the systems are very shallow.
SundaeComfortable628
I’d say Cyberpunk. Was disaster in the beginning, then they fixed most of the issues over time, made an anime that brought attention back to the game ( won anime of the year too), then made a really good DLC to end it off.
GunMuratIlban
Oh definitely. I mean at launch, Sean Murray was literally accused of being a con artist. This guy was in legal trouble.
I mean you can argue Cyberpunk 2077 too; but the majority of the changes consisted of fixes, while it also received visual and gameplay improvements too of course. And CDPR were already a giant, they couldn’t just escape.
Hello Games though, they could’ve just took the money and run.

Lmao the hell it is. Take a look at FFXIV and come back.
Conscious_Paint_5574
This wasn’t a “comeback”, this was damage control because if they didn’t fix the game Scam Murray and the rest of his company knew that their careers were permanently shuttered in this industry.

Hmm try cyberpunk
V-Vesta
FFXIV should be n°1.
NMS n°2.
Cyberpunk n°3
NMS straight out lied about their product and went radio silence trying to repair their wrongs. The game is now above what he promised but it’s gameplay loop is still extremely shallow. (+40hrs this year and +20hrs on launch when I was a kid)
FFXIV went from a horrible gaming experience to a great MMORPG with good complexity, engaging gameplay and story with banger soundtracks. However, I believe the game is now going downhill in terms of complexity and gameplay as every class got reduced to the same CDR / Burst window… which is kinda awful.
Ritushido
The core game sucks ass. Always has and always will it doesn’t matter how much fluff they add on top without fixing that.
